Louis is mostly seeing how it goes, and if he can get a better option in life than taking over the family business. He'll probably still go do that eventually, even if he does wind up making a name for himself as a trainer, but it can't hurt.

He hasn't been in many, really. Mostly just ones run by the school he attended. His best record is a 3-1-0, where he wound up battling through an Igglybuff, a Poocheyna, and a Bellsprout before his Weedle got bodied by a Fennekin someone had managed to get.

Funny enough, I'm going to be writing up a tourney for him after I get a couple of chapters done. I've got at least a couple of the entrants in it already figured out, but I'm going to need to fill in a few more to pad it out.

I really wanted to get across that a pokemon wouldn't inherently think in terms of named "moves", that's a construct developed by humans to categorize battle techniques. A pokemon like Torch doesn't instinctively know what a "Fire Punch" is, but he understands the intent behind Luke's command.

For wild Pokémon, actions are instinctive and situational rather than predefined techniques with rigid names. A wild Arcanine doesn’t think "I’ll use Flamethrower," it just breathes fire when necessary. More intelligent Pokémon, like Alakazam, might be able to recognize and internalize human terminology, but ultimately, they adapt to human battle structures rather than inherently operating within them.

I had two hours of free time entirely to myself this past Tuesday night to give Dragon Quest Monsters 3 a try. It hasn't hooked me the way 2 did, which is pretty disappointing. Not to be confused with Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3, which is also fantastic and Japan-exclusive.
I've still got an anime recommendation from a friend that I need to get around to as well. So much for being ahead of the curve on that one!

As far as I'm concerned they know they're whole learn list, and whatever TMs or tutor moves they've been taught. I feel this better reflects Pokemon as living things able to channel the elements within them. As games go I think PLA did a great job of just letting you use a pokemon's entire learn list.

The League, however, dictates that if you're going to be participating in League Legal combat, you're restricted to four to six.

Just feels more grounded to me.

Working on repetitive shapes with Midge's new dress. It's the one I picked last thread but honey yellow with little hexagons all over it. Some of the hexagons will be the little faces of combee.

pretty much also my approach to moves, especially now that new games let you swap moves on the fly. it's also kind of like how fighters tend to specialize in certain styles or techniques. you usually rely on whatever moves your muscle remember best, i find it's common enough that people "forget" or entirely forego techniques they've learned in the heat of a fight just because, even if said moves would help in whatever situation they're in, it just doesn't occur to them to leverage it. it takes a trainer to help a pokemon make the most of their potential skillsets in that sense.

I don't know if shields will be applicable to Pokemon in Alex's cyberpunk stuff. When I saw your post, my first thought was no, and the reason would be because the shields would somehow fuck with the veil of Infinity Energy that keeps Pokemon from dying when they're struck by an attack, as long as they haven't fainted yet. As a result, they would actually make Pokemon vulnerable to being killed instead of providing a shield, and thus putting shields on Pokemon would become banned; criminals and vigilantes would now develop devices that forcibly put "shields" onto Pokemon in order to get rid of them easier, as well as for use in underground deathmatch leagues. This would lead to frequent deaths in the seedier sides of the setting, as well as police and private security operations. At some point, Alex would sardonically remark that he's "on his fifth Weavile", which would paint a picture of how shitty the setting really is. Now, I'm not so sure. As dumb as it sounds, allowing for shields to be put onto Pokemon kind of ruins the "slut shield" slang (see >>57365539). Would it now just only be a "slut shield" if it's put on someone wearing a crop top or a Gardevoir? I don't think implementing them would be too difficult though, while I'm not set on including TTRPG elements in it, I guess it could just work like temporary HP in DnD.

I probably won't do hexes all over, I want this to be a combee themed dress. I'm thinking putting it along the skirt instead of the chest of it. maybe in little hex flower patterns. I pretty much want the hexes so I can put little smileys in there. I agree that it doesn't need to be the whole dress.

But really, I hope to see the Writing Tasks break away from the archivist meta by encouraging shorter form content. Not everything needs to be a doorstopping epic, and I think Torch is a perfect example of making a big impact with a small word count.

At the risk of sounding like a sour grape, I'm rather bearish on writing tasks. The thread's been stated to be unusually fast moving for /vp/ and several people here including myself have mentioned having rather busy lives and I think that would sizably get in the way of writing something each week. Also, it's harder to handle scope when approaching broad topics from a writing perspective. It's easy to leave things up to interpretation when drawing, harder when writing. For instance, I could write out a full ass tournament arc for this one if I wanted to, but I don't have the time to be given a new project on top of the one I'm already working on, and the several ones that I have on the backburner. Not too many people's schedules have the time to fit in a weekly prompt thrust upon them without diminishing the time they have for their actual solo projects or their IRL stuff. It's not like the interviews that came about during the first half of last year which didn't have any specified time limit.
I like the idea, don't get me wrong, and I like the two things that have been made so far, but I don't think it'll work out in practice. But all of that is just my opinion and perspective. A potential compromise could be to rotate them every month instead of every thread, but in a thread by thread format, I think it's just too fast paced.Also, I personally dislike the wording of "breaking away from the Archivist Meta", given that I am writing a doorstopping epic and I don't want market trends to shift away from that before I complete it. But in the Archivist's own words, this isn't about me.

I think I'm already subconsciously familiar with the need to flesh things out. Old OC from the “Edgyverse” era in between the death of /tog/ 1.0 and the birth of /tog/ 2.0. She was an AI generation and kind of the mascot of those threads. The storyline behind her is that Dorado Guerrero, a spic drug lord, is after her because she found an Iron Moth in Zirca (an OC region made by Nyantcha with a laughably corrupt E4 and dictatorial Champion). What he doesn’t know is that the Iron Moth is now bonded to her and will protect her at all costs, in addition to her other Pokemon. She had a bad dream where she gets raped by several Pokemon in a brothel run by Dorado, but she wakes up from it and tries to escape Zirca. Nothing ever came of her storyline besides some greentexts and those threads died down because they got stale due to Nyantcha moving on from Zirca and also most Zirca content just being porn. Fun fact: the Zirca region was stated to be based off of Canada.

Part of the Zirca lore is that Vos Xavion was importing Ultra Beasts and other dangerous Pokemon in order to up Zirca’s power level, Dorado also had some stakes in the Aether Foundation and Lusamine gave him a Nigganadel as an apology for something (don’t remember what). Being completely fair, Koa also trains non-Dragon types if he thinks they fit the bill. He has a Larvitar and a Milotic. He was inspired by Lance, who has stated in Pokémon Masters that to him, not all dragons are Dragon type. Charizard, Gyarados, Aerodactyl and a few others are valid dragons.

In-universe, Koa has a “dragon radar” sense that helps him notice the “dragon energy” of a Pokémon. It’s pretty much just how much of a draconic vibe that Pokémon has. Here’s a list of some Pokémon that could have dragon energy without being Dragon types:

Charizard
Gyarados
Lapras
Aerodactyl
Ampharos
Tyranitar
Sceptile
Aggron
Milotic
Krookodile
Skeledirge

Generally, a reptile-looking Pokémon that can learn one or two Dragon-type moves, or a Pokémon who obtains the type with Mega Evolution, can have large amounts of dragon energy in Koa’s eyes. A Pokémon can also achieve this by generally knowing a Dragon-type move, like a Lucario with Dragon Pulse, which they can have, or by having a Dragon Tera Type.

Part 1 one ended a few weeks ago. Of the three groups who were sent to collect assets for the Ultra Recon Squad only one was successful.

Unity (Team 1): tasked by Commander Talina, the pretty blue woman, to go to a world where Mewtwo ruled as a tyrant. It had converted Lumiose Tower into a hub of psychic power. A network of sorts that linked all psychics into a hive mind. They were supposed to go and take over the tower and see if they could repurpose its technology to allow them to resist Necrozma's psychic attacks when the time came.

This ended with them tripping an alarm, bringing Mewtwo to them and then escaping with one of the players almost dying.

In PTU, Mewtwo can shape-shift for free. What is a super genius to do when those who challenge its authority sing disappear. Kidnap a npc, follow them back to Ultra Megalopolis when they go to heal up, start all kinds of problems.

They ended up using Ultra Recon portal technology to send Mewtwo to the Distortion World in a battle that nearly killed them.

Talina is fine, she only got mostly dead. She has recovered and the group is preparing a second assault on the tower.

Uuuuuh… I mean, if I were writing Zinnia’s inclusion into my writing, I’d say she’d start making a new clan or something. Maybe not as a family, but rather with like-minded people. That, or she’d probably be okay with being the last one. If you mean in terms of a clan as a family, well yeah, it’s kinda over, but a clan can be more than just a family. It can be big, like a community, or just one family.

Koa’s ancestry hails from a larger clan from Opelucid, most likely related to Iris and Drayden’s ancestors, but he calls his family a “clan” more or less to feel cooler about it. Any relation to larger clans now is distant, but Koa’s actually a little closer to Drasna’s ancestors from his mother’s side. Na’u (Koa’s mom) is a few steps away from Drasna’s family, like a third cousin or something. Koa’s dad’s family hails from Unova, and Koa’s mom comes from Kalos, but they both came to Alola after their grandparents moved there. Koa’s a third generation immigrant, funny enough. Is that even a term?

In future chapters, Arai and Mari will start making it a point to catch up with Emily and they will end up sparring directly with her. Though in the end the way that they train comes down to what kind of speed they excel in to keep up with Emily.

Arai would be the type to keep up in terms of full-body agility, meaning their spars take place over an entire area as they constantly move around trying to out-maneuver each other to the point it ends up looking like a DBZ or maybe certain JJK battles as they blitz around the field and cause tons of environmental damage with their clashes.

Spar sessions between Emily and Mari however would be like pic related where they just stand in one spot for hours as they spar in bouts of dexterity, becoming mere blurs of motion as an unrelenting storm of clangs and clashes as they break dozens of swords and turn the entire immediate radius around them barren as thousands of slash marks are left in the ground outright before the sparring is done for the day. They only bother stopping when they get hungry.

All 3 girls will basically be monsters in their own rights in time.

I created this OC back when Koa Anon was talking about a tournament in his story and I suggested maybe a prize for winning was a Frigibax egg brought by the Paldean dragon clan members participating, if Koa Anon wanted to explain how his character got a Frigibax, but that option didn't quite work out for what he had in mind. But it got me thinking about making a Dragon-type specialist.

Not entirely satisfied with the first name, but Clan Cuélebre of Paldea is the important part. She acts as an international liaison on behalf of her clan and her job is to travel between the different dragon clans in other regions to handle diplomatic relations. This could be anything from settling disputes to coordinating meetings. To reflect her role as an intermediary, all of her Poke'mon are mid-stage, because she acts as a bridge between and all of her Poke'mon represent a different region that has a dragon clan.
Her partner is Arctibax, representing her clan in Paldea.
Dragonair represents the Kanto/Johto clan.
Vibrava represents Hoenn, but the Draconids seems to be gone.
Gabite for Sinnoh.
Fraxure for Unova.
And Hakumo-o for Koa's Alolan dragon clan.
I don't think Kalos and Galar have dragon clans, so no Sliggoo or Drakloak.

Oh, this is super cool! Mind you, the Frigibax thing has been at the back of my head since then. I’m not entirely ruling it out. It might make for a bit too many side plots, but we’ll see. What struck me as odd first, though, was the concept that giving Koa a Baxcalibur was some kind of competitively-motivated decision, because I think Alexanon said something like that once. “Oh, give him a Baxcalibur instead of (some other mon on his team) because it’s very good” or something like that. That’s the second reason why I’m holding off on it, but I do think the concept of Koa raising a Frigibax from an egg is actually very cool and I might, if anything, do side chapters about it.

My schedule MIGHT BE CLEARING UP. I could maybe start to write Chapter 2, actually.

Writing was not fun today. I finished one long paragraph and have made the skeleton for five other paragraphs that are going to tie these two scenes together, but I did not finish any of them. I did say that, and it was in order to upgrade his team before the final battle. The idea behind it is that since the Milotic is the more tender one of the group, Koa chooses to swap her out so she doesn't have to witness the horrors of the finale. Then, there could be a "loving embrace" moment when she gets to see the rest of the team after some time. Likewise, I also suggested Dragonite to replace Exeggcutor, not only because it's stronger but also because it's genuinely fitting for him. In addition, Bax also helps to widen the foil between Koa and Hemlock's team, with Hemlock primarily using special attackers while Koa primarily uses physical attackers. Even independently of stats, Ice Godzilla and the OG Dragon are just stronger. Similar to how Hydreigion is a heel to Kommo-o, Arch is a heel to Bax, it can survive Earthquake and KO back with STAB or Body Press, and in general it makes Koa's battles with Hemlock more challenging since it's not just Tyranitard that has to watch out. It's deepening the motif of primal, instinctual warriors that charge into battle going against calculated, intelligent hunters that strike from a distance.

Indeed I do. Introducing Yoann (Yo-hahn), a questing knight from Camphrier Town touring the world from the back of his noble steed: Tyrantrum.
The Kalos Region has no true Dragon Tamers with the exception of Drasna in the Elite 4 (presumably, they were all killed and eaten by the Fairy Tale Girls), prompting Yoann to travel abroad in search of the Dragon Tamer clans to train under. He lives an ascetic lifestyle as he travels from place to place. Not because of any personal philosophy or modesty, but because his three dragons eat through his entire travel budget and he has to get creative.
Inspired by the stories and legends told to him in his youth, he can never turn away from someone in need of help, no matter who they are (for better and for worse). Although he can be easily misled, Yoann's knightly virtues keep him from straying off the noble path for very long.
He met his Doublade partner outside of his hometown, he first encountered his Escavalier while searching for Goomy, and his Armarouge joined him during his travels through Paldea (noble knights must quest together). The Dragon Tamers there refused to associate with his Tyrantrum and Hassel wasn't interested in being his mentor, and so Yoann had no choice but to continue on his journey elsewhere.

I knew I wanted to make a questing knight with a twist--while Gogoat is the go-to for Kalosian travel (Mamoswine and Rhyhorn being kniche picks, with the latter being a knovelty for its demolition derby races, and Cyclizar presumably failing to establish a role in the ecosystem unless we see it introduced in Z-A), it... is really knot exactly the ideal mount for a knight, for a knumber of reasons. Knot often enough, I say. Maybe he's afraid of heights. His look leans on the plain side because I've learned from Azelie's knightmarishly complex wardrobe, so riding on a Tyrantrum gives our boy some real stage presence that very few others have.

Unfortunately for Yoann, all of his mons are late bloomers, so it couldn't have been easy growing up without a Dragon master to shepherd him. Although, I think her Iron Moth was depicted as a sociopath that performed twisted experiments on her would be captors. Her other pokemon were in on it too but she was blissfully unaware of this fact. Her Pokemon are probably like a gang of thugs people are afraid of, and so they expect their trainer to be like a super edgelord badass or something like that and it turns out not to be the case at all. She was depicted as living in lower zirca, the shithole to end all shitholes, so there must be a reason why she survived down there for so long.

Koa would find it a bit weird that he calls himself a dragon tamer while using markedly non-dragon vibes Pokémon like Aegislash and the Paldea knights, but I think they could be pretty good friends! It’d be really funny for Yoann to show up to Alola and expect Koa to lead a huge clan, but actually it’s just his mom and dad, and whatever extended family they have. Koa would totally go fanboy mode if he knew that Yoann has met Hassel (Koa’s a big Hassel fan) and he had to explain to his parents what a fossil Pokémon was after he brought Chomper the Tyrunt home, so yeah, I think they’d have a lot in common. Maybe Koa would consider giving Mo-o reins so he can ride him like Yoann does his Tyrantrum, but then Mo-o would get annoyed and offer Koa his shoulder like usual.

if there's a particular body part you have a hard time drawing you have to start staring at pictures of it until you trick your mind into finding it attractive. for examples sake, i'm not saying you have to go full yoshikage kira and start jerking it to hands, but looking at hands, real and drawn, and lingering on what might make them beautiful, the way the joints of the fingers jut out ever so slightly, the way shadows fall between knuckles and the skin sitting above metacarpal bone, you'll find yourself being less annoyed by having to draw something you dislike and more motivated to replicate the beauty you find in it i suppose it's more an appropriate mindset than a skill thing, but i find without the former, it'll be hard to develop the latter

Weirdly enough, though I don't have any attractions to odd body parts, I sometimes look at my own hands and feet just to survey their proportions. Though I'm not an expert on anatomy, I feel like they're proportioned well? Evenly? I feel like having good proportions/ratios would be key to drawing a good-looking hand or foot (and the opposite for an intentionally ugly bodypart).
Also, can I start copypasting your art advice stuff into a pastebin? I had to search for a quarter for an hour for the coloring advice that you posted last year. I feel like a lot of good advice ends up getting buried, I also want to compile Archivist's stuff into that document for a sort of resource.

Nope, cause then I would have a good time drawing back muscles, but it's still hell.
Besides having a bajillion reference images to how things look at different angles, I'd say having a 3D model onhand helps. Boots and footwear in general are particularly tough for me, but if I have said model on the side and positioned at the appropriate angle, I get a better impression of the shapes overall and how it interacts with the piece

still applies? like i said, i'm not telling people to develop fetishes necessarily, and this is more a mindset than skill or technique based approach simply because if you go into a drawing thinking "well i hate drawing x" you'll be miserable the whole time and thus more liable to give up, because unless art's your job, you'll have nothing to reward or gratify for the work you put in, and generally less enthusiasm for practice. train yourself to see beauty in things you once paid no mind to and art suddenly become much more enjoyable. also you don't have to look at yourself, you can always look online, iirc its not like those marble statues you see in museums aren't usually based on any 1 person, but were amalgams of attractive body parts the artist observed from multiple models. as for copy pasting yeah sure go for it
