>>57413878I don't understand the question.
but yeah, something like the Picori helping a cobbler in minish cap make the pegasus boots was a MASSIVE deep cut. We may have an entire cookie brand playing on the idea, but the majority of japanese people have never heard of "The Elves and the Shoemaker" or any other Grimms fairy tale for the most part.
And even then, the Picori are primarily a take on the Ainu Korpokkur, they just made a neat reference.
Santa having elves is basically nonexistent too.
All Norse mythology is rarely referenced and when is it's mostly just the weapons, because Final Fantasy referenced them in some equally deep cuts.
And not even Tolkien, the western archetypal touchstone for fantasy, ever really took root.
So it really all came via D&D redbox moldvay basic being released in 1985 and being a flash int he pan smash hit, leading to Zelda, Dragon Quest, and Record of Lodoss all in 86, and Sword World in 89.
But then the translation company flubbed the printing for AD&D 2e due to low print runs and high prices. And then they tried a redo with a RulesCyclopedia release, but WotC bought TSR and kiboshed the whole operation. And none of the WotC editions ever sold more than a few thousand copies. So D&D was their only true exposure to western medieval fantasy, it was exactly once then immediately fell into total obscurity. So their only lasting touchstones for western fantasy are all japanese takes on western fantasy.
But yeah it's kind of funny, cause for instance Delicious in Dungeon FEELS like Moldvay Basic B/X Mystara, more than anything official D&D has for two decades, but apparently the author had never even heard of D&D.
