For whatever reason, every monster collector other than pokemon wanted to reinvent the wheel every game/television series and change absolutely everything. It's cool for a kid, but it either becomes jarring because it's unrecognizable or the new stuff just outclasses everything from the past, making time investment into learning the series pointless as the next one will just be better.
I can verify because my wife hasn't played Pokemon since gen 4, but when our children watch the new series, she has no trouble understanding what's happening or deduce the formula as even with Liko as the star, it's still essentially pokemon.
tl'dr it's an easy series to pick up and put down whenever you feel like it
