the low encounter rate/specific time of day mons are cool, i just think there should've been more. i used phanpy and teddiursa in my last crystal run. would've been cool if mons like slugma/murkrow could also be found early on if you knew where to look

I've never understood why "X region has Pokémon from other regions" is a criticism anyway. It seems rather arbitrary and subjective. As if different places can't have native populations of the same creatures.

it depends on the proportion compared to the new mons, no one complains that there are also old mons in hoenn because the game gives the new pokemon a chance to shine, johto was designed with a different philosophy, but for many, it remains a flaw

Yup. It was a design choice for Unova. But every other game doesn't do this. Likw you aren't supposed to avoid using Pidgey in GSC because it was introduced in RBY.

Twas never a problem for me since you can get Mareep, Wooper, and Hopip that can be in your endgame team right after Violet City.

So play GS then. Every game has unobtainables.

Stop trying to speedrun the game and touch grass. GS was designed so kids could play for an hour or two every day after school and be immersed in it, not so adult shut-ins playing on emulators could cheese the game to reach the E4 in one afternoon.

I don't think having Pokemon from past gens as a whole is a problem, but Johto has a bit of a problem of viewing some new Pokemon as a prize for game progress rather than potential team members to reach that game progress, which leads to some Johtomons being treated with undue rarity while Kantomons of comparable or better strength are much more readily available. Larvitar is available after the fifth gym at best and the sixteenth gym at worst while Dratini is available before the third, in every game except crystal Sneasel is only available after getting all the Kanto badges while you can get Jynx before Clair and in HGSS you can get Articuno before Sneasel (whose crossgen evolution requires you to grind the battle frontier to get), and Yanma is a 1% encounter while just a bit to the north you can do the bug catching contest where Scyther and Pinsir have a 5% encounter rate each (this is remedied a bit by HGSS letting you get Yanmega a bit before Clair, but having a Pokemon that starts off weak be extremely rare while one starts off strong is a bit more common is still a bit weird). I'm sure this worked well when the games first came out and Johtomons were novel by merit of being new, but it's an aspect that doesn't make the games aging well and HGSS could've stood to change the distribution to account for Johtomons being less novel after two generations.
