If someone said 'make a cool magician', only Takahashi would make something like Dark Magician or Dark Magician of Chaos. Same for Digimon. I think I get what you are saying- like if everything is cool, then nothing is? Like you can't have a Pokedex of Nidokings and Scythers, you have to add in cute, pretty, and odd designs too. I think that is a good design philosophy for Pokemon. I can't help but think some designs I see as 'you were almost perfect' may have had iterations which were perfect and then made less cool for the final iteration.
