They're just going by consumer data - which is a perfectly logical thing for them to do.
Consumer polled data (from Japan, which is the one they care about) gives back persistent trends: humanoid/furry 'mons, marketable plushie 'mons, and weird/cool monster 'mons. Meowscarada is remarkably popular.
