Alolan regionals have their own names, but we call them by the names of the "originals" because we already know them as Sandshrew or Diglett

The only one that was revealed so far has been "Keokeo" which is Alolan Vulpix, as far as I know

Exactly what happened with the American bison or Tazmania Wolf in our reality.

The best example is the penguin, which received its name by mistake, when it was confused with the extinct great auk due to its similarity in colour (Pinguinus impennis).
