Attk gets outclassed by a 'roided out Gyarados for a playthrough, because it focused on one stat (Attk) instead of trying to split their focus. Then there's the fact it looks far fucking cooler than the also-rans, especially in Gen 1, where the starter was a fat, retarded turtle whose anime appearance really didn't help to change that view, given its ep aired long after Japan had decided it was wank.
But then again, I always picked Fire types, as they were always rare as fuck in-region and were either specifically dogshit compared to the Starter choice, or found too late-game to be worth adding to a team so it's wild the only times I picked anything but a Fire starter was Gens 7 and 9, partly because their feminine designs, partly because for the first time in the respective starter histories, they made a water and grass starter actually worth the fuck picking over anything you could pick up in-region along the way - one with a godly typing and Sp. Attk/Def stats, one with godly speed, attack and guaranteed crits along with a plethora of other high-crit chance moves.
