Fearow is a great Pokemon for the early game, good for mid but mediocre for the rest.

Pidgeot is the long term commitment Pokemon that you can take to the Elite Four.

Fearow is better than Pidgey, reaching its final form two levels after Midgey becomes Pidgeotto. It also has infinitely better flying STAB. It's not as good as Dodrio, but it's better for the Early Game up to around Erika, which coincidentally is when you can pick up Doduo.

I didn't like Pidgeot. I didn't even catch a Pidgey. I don't like Fearow much, but I do like it more than Pidgeot. I didn't catch a Spearow either.

Pidgey is one of the worst starting birds ever, what with learning Wing Attack (which has a shit base power anyways in Gen 1) way too late, and a really bad and limited movepool. Spearow/Fearow at least gets Peck and Drill Peck which carries it to the mid game.
