Kids always just pick whatever looks coolest. No shit they’re choosing a cool baby crocodile over a green bean/sausage with a leaf coming out of its head. Grass starters are always the worst choice aside from Gen 8 and maybe 9. Fire is always the best for tearing shit up in the early game since you’re typically battling lots of grass and bug types.

You don't have a leg to stand on anymore.
The Rowlet line is one of the only modern lines to be wholly good.
Rowlet in particular is great early game since it's part flying type, it can beat grass and bug like fire can, in addition to beating fighting, rock, ground and water like fire can't, this works great for the first two Kahunas and the water and grass totem Pokemon.

As someone who used Chikorita, while it being a bit girlier in design might be part of the reason, it fucking sucked in game. Yeah, it was useable, but even me as a dumb child could tell it wasn't weak and unfun to use. For a competitive team in the right gen and tier, it could be fun. It has decent utility.
