I wouldn't be surprised if Pokemon went down the same route as megaman. Where the base/classic series is E for everyone but different Pokemon series are more dark and edgy. It's a good way to branch out since Pokemon is so powerful of a franchise that it can basically do whatever the hell it wants.

This will be catastrophic for the Pokemon brand. How many billions will be lost after parents stop buying Pokemon games and merchandise for Little Timmy due to the scandal of E10+ fantasy violence? I can't believe Pokemon has made such a massive misstep.

Other rating boards have deemed some games as unsuitable for little children already so this is nothing new.

It's E10+ because of the realtime battles inherently requiring the combat to be "more intense" by virtue of close-range attacks actually being executed at close-range.
Yes, they're still going to use energy constructs, but it's slightly less abstracted, so the rating boards are going to judge accordingly based on that.

It says 7+ on the UK page, which I'm pretty sure is what all mainline Pokemon games since the 3DS era have been rated here. I don't know why some are making a weirdly big deal over this - it's not going to be any different than your usual Pokemon game, it's just that the battle system is a little more 'violent'.

That's exactly it. Americans are so used to Pokemon being harmless with its depiction of battles, so seeing that they'll actually be a little more physical without flashy anime effects like how some Pokemon do afterimage teleportation in PLA is leaning in the direction of "too much for burgers", similar to how they censored Squirtle biting Charmander in Pokemon Origins.
