Do people actually like these games or is it blind nostalgia? because honestly i've been replaying heart gold and the levels are so unbalanced that it fucking sucks to play.
like the following pokemon are cute, i'll give it that, but i'm just not having a good time with the early game. (i just got to Ecruteak)

it's not meant to be a genwar thing,. i love gen 4. I'll happily replay platinum again. i just don't like this iteration of johto (and i refuse to play gen 2 to see if the originals were any better because i just don;t like the pre gen 4 battle system as much i can barely handle playing gen 3 but that's the only time the kanto games were worth playing)

I have insane nostalgia for silver and crystal, but I never bothered with hgss when they released. I played through hg on an emulator in 2019, and I mostly enjoyed it, but nowhere near as much as I was expecting to. I should probably give crystal a try to see how I feel about that, and then also give hgss another shot but mess with making it 60fps and messing with emulator settings because that might have been an issue, I don't quite remember. I just remember it didn't feel great to play

I think they’re good for the visuals and sheer amount of content they have alone, but it feels more like the developers were more focused on adding minigames with dumb timegates than making a fun game. The wonky level progression, rng-dependent rematch system, poor TM and evolution item availability, dull story segments, and fairly limited pool of Pokemon make for a boring experience if you’re not immersed in the game. It doesn’t respect your time at all

HGSS is one of my 3 favorite games (FRLG, Platinum, HGSS) but there are some things about HGSS that piss me off.
>Following Pokemon is an obligatory feature, that can't be turned off. I think it's a cute feature but it gets boring quick when it's obligatory
>PokeAthlon is an inferior side activity compared to Contests, Secret Bases or the Underground
>It's so annoying to rematch trainers. The VS Seeker is superior
>The HP bar drain is so slow (same problem I have with Platinum)

It's good up to Morty because it's completely linear and the levels aren't fucked yet. Ironically, the path for most of it is literally a circle.
Then shit hits the bed afterwards. Grinding is a pain because almost everything is extremely underleveled. Rocket Hideout for example is incredibly boring if you went west from Ecruteak first. The level 40 legendaries and the level 50 Magikarps on Route 43 are used to cut grinding out of the equation.

the 2nd half of johto makes no sense. they probably wanted you to go around and explore before doing shit, but none of it is interconnected like it was in kanto. it's more or less a line you go back and forth in. how ironic, the nonlinear section is basically almost a line lol

It's hilarious how every criticism of Johto boils down to either complete non-issues, like gym leaders using mostly gen 1 pokemon, or "WAHHHH I WANT EVERYTHING NOW I WANT HOUNDOOM NOW I WANT TO LEVEL UP NOW"
HGSS rewards patience and hard work, filtering ADHD zoomers in the process. It truly is the best Pokémon title, and it's not even close. Every little accomplishment is a journey in and of itself

I think it's fair to want to be able to access the new pokemon in the new pokemon game sooner than later
slugma gets more play in gen 3 than it does in its own gen for pete's sake

sone of the criticism's are fair or at least understandable, and I think HGSS should have at least let Houndoom available in the safari zone before the elite 4 like Larvitar and Murkow, or even make it a rare encounter in a new area like they did with Misdreavus in Cliff Cave. But much of the complaints pretty much boil down to whining about having to engage with the game instead of being handed things for free even though having to go out of your way to search for certain Pokemon is one of the main aspects of the Pokemon series.

I have a ridiculous amount of nostalgia for Crystal (one of my first games; a rare time that my dad spent quality time with me), but I genuinely think GSC is better than HGSS for an unmodded, casual playthrough. The infamous level curve really doesn’t mean shit when you have stat exp and badge boosts on your side.

It is. HGSS is better if you are looking for something to play for hte long hall even after completing the main game. Crystal is better if you want a more streamlined gen 2 experience. Both are great, but for different reasons IMO.

The complaints about pokemon availability are overblown, but I do think there are routes in Johto where Houndour/Murkrow/Misdreavus would have made sense. Larvitar should never leave Mt Silver, though, and I hate when people shove Slugma into Johto.

If it weren't for all the cut Kanto locations in GSC (Cerulean Cave, Seafoam Islands, Viridian Forest, etc) I'd say that Crystal is a better game than HGSS.

Crystal has:
>Better graphics and art style
>Better music from the beginning
>No dual screen crap
>A better Battle Tower
>The ability to customize the player's room
>No Pokemon following you (it would've been a positive but it cannot be turned off, making it a negative).

So yeah, if it weren't for the butchered Kanto region, I would say Crystal is the best way to experience Gen 2.
