The game is in the future of few years from X&Y due to various character being older version of themselves:
An older Emma is in charge of the Looker Bureau alongside an older Calem (if you choose a male avatar) or Serena (if you choose a female avatar) (Calem looks the same but with longer hair and the right side colored grey).
Tierno, Trevor and Shauna can be find in the game and they are older (they look like they are middle age).
Quasartico is what remains of the old Team Flare (past charcters from the team are present and older). MC works for Quasartico (similar to PLA).
Jett is the younger sister of Malva, she is an ace with flying type pokemon and is the villain but not the big bad. She forces pokemon into containment zones not because she wants to create a better Lumiouse city but because she wants to use their energy to megaevolve Alpha-Zygarde.
Alpha-Zygarde is a form variation of Zygarde irradiated with Quasar energy. Alpha-Zygarde is sending out sparks of energy at night, megaevolving pokemons and making them mad.
No gym system but there is a Zone Captains system that makes you go through the next level of containment zones.
Unlike PLA, when you reach a certain Quasar level you get a promotion match with one of the captains ( that is basically a mission to go on though the story).
Riding Pokémon return but have different effects than PLA. For example: Dark/Flying divergent evolution of the regional variant of Zubat (Dark/Flying) called Antigrabat for gliding only (in the first trailer was deleted in the animation). Function similar to BoTW.
Other promotions to higher levels in Quasartico give you technologies to explore the city instead (like the roof teleport).
