was this whole gen thing around in the 90's? i collected a bit of the cards back then and watched the anime but checked out shortly after
came back recently and people keep mentioning gen 4, 5, 6 etc? does that apply to the gameboy gfames or tv show or cards?
i remember pokemon being quite simple but now there are thousands of pokemon and way more types and it seems its lost its animal/plant/elements themes in pokemon, most now look like cheap robotic futuristic slop

the pokemon franchise is beyond saving
it's the biggest franchise right now at nearly $100 billion, and let's say, only 10% of the revenue comes from games while the remaining 90% comes from merchandise, anime, movies, etc
that's still a $10 billion franchise that produces slop-quality games
at this point, if you really like the monster tamer genre, look for alternatives
there's a new digimon and a new yokai watch coming up
there's dokev and roco kingdom coming up
stop giving money to a franchise that is actively killing the monster tamer genre

“Gen” started with Gen 3 when the franchise went under a soft reboot. It wasn’t a thing in RBY and GSC. New Pokémon were just new Pokemon.

Not him but simply on the basis that an IP's shit era can't last forever. Mario had no incentive to restore its charm, introduce wacky new OCs, and venture back into dark stories so at some point, the same has to happen for Pokémon. SV did introduce an open world which was something fans have wanted for a long time now and Area Zero was cool so beneath all the alleged complacency and lack of technological skill, there's still a sliver of passion and a willingness to take fan feedback into consideration.

Starting with gen 6 where the games looked uglier, gave you more tools that trivialized your adventure, removed engaging post-game content, and are generally regarded as slop.

Starting with gen 5 where the games looked uglier, gave you more tools that trivialized your adventure, removed engaging post-game content, and are generally regarded as slop.

A lot of the Unova mons look great and the overworld pushed the DS and the general art style involving how you expect Pokémon games to look to its limits.
