I would give anything for Pokemon to be like this again, I am so tired of Gamefreak trying to shove "friend" characters in my face, my Pokemon are my friends in a long journey to the top, I want a rival who tests my abilities as a trainer, I want to feel like I want to best the bastard, I want a story with a subtle hint of darkness in the background like Kanto had with shady towns, casinos, gangs everywhere and such. I want to stumble upon a rare Pokemon or a strange location on accident and be mesmerized by it. There's something so magical about old Pokemon and growing in the early to mid 90's that zoomers just don't grasp, it was a different time, a better time.
