Mega Fug for example was objectively worse than it in VGC despite being able to carry an item, because by comparison it lacked intimidate, a stab spread move, and required you to use up both your mega and one of your restricted slots.
Zamazenta for example is great in VGC now, and it both can’t hold an item and uses a restricted slot, so it has more limitations placed on it than your average mega. No reason to think M-Salamence would be powercrept now when it already functioned fine in a meta that had more stacked directly against it. It’s probably best to compare it to Raging Bolt.
