How come the sprites of red pokeballs are depicted as orange in all the games prior to Gen9? The Cherish Ball seems to be the only exception.

Orange isn't a color, the delineation between it and red are man made the same way we look at pink as a different color, or brown
Haven't you noticed there's no brown on the color wheel? Brown is just dark orange, yes tigers do it fact have brown fur
Orange is just red on its way to yellow

Guess so. The item sprites from later games on The Spriters Resource seem identical. SwSh also has the orange Pokéballs.

It's super weird. Those Poké Ball sprites first appeared in Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen for the GameBoy Advance back in 2004. I can understand having them orange back then because the GameBoy Advance wasn't backlit, so being orange would've been easier to see on the unlit screen. But then they reused them without fixing the colors in Gen 4 when Gen 4+ are all on backlit screens. Same with Gen 5. Same with Gen 6. Same with Gen 7. Same with Gen 8. It's incredible laziness.

If you want to be THIS pedantic then purple/violet (and the likes) are even LESS real due our brains recoding the blank space between red and blue as the aforement "color" when in reality our visible spectrum begins with a very faint reddish brown to red and ends with a very obscure blue that fades to black (near ultraviolet or blacklight), yet is in the color wheel for some damned reason

Global link the only official source that depicts them as orange. The Cherish Ball has a more vibrant red, so that might be the reason why it stands out.

One can get used to it, but when you see how they're canonically supposed to be reddish-pinkish, it makes it look cheap or bootleg. Like, they have been coated with some cheap color that faded over time after being exposed to sunlight for too long.

The small pokeball is a summary sprite from
Gen4 and 5.

Using a more pinkish hue really improves the sprites, without being too vibrant while being distinguishable from the Cherish Ball.

Isn't brown like a combination of two complementary colors? Would explain why it's not on the color wheel, simply because it has a special function.

Unless I'm confusing something around with light colors and material ones.

I vaguely remember the two colors thing from elementary school art classes, but as a graphic designer I can confirm that the way you make brown/tan digitally with light is to darken and desaturate orange, it's the same in the cmyk colorspace for printing as it is in rgb however the computer/printer translate the digital value into a matching pigment combination. Open up paint or whatever and try it out!
