I was in high school when Gen 3 came out and I remember when the designs started leaking after the Japanese release a lot of people remarking that they went super hard but "none of them looked like Pokémon." Gen 3 is definitely a turning point because so many of the Pokémon designs leaned into looking cooler and less like generic blobby JRPG monsters, which was ultimately a good change. And when the beta stuff leaked last year, you could actually see sort of how that transition happened. We got some really cool designs in that generation and I think it stands out for how many bangers there are across the entire dex. Gen 4 comes pretty close, but it definitely dialed it back, while Gen 5 I think leaned into it too hard and we got a lot of designs that feel "off." And then the modern era just sort of went crazy with the big heads and the new forms of old Pokémon and all that dumb shit... Leaving Gen 3 really feeling like it was lightning in a bottle
