They know they can't get their nostalgia fix from any other franchise because no one else can legally make a Pokemon game, and the old games have long since lost their luster since they no longer stack up compared to the rose-tinted nostalgia of when they played for the first time.
It's ENTIRELY the brand's name and monsters that hold them hostage, that's all they care about. If any other company could legally produce video games with Pokemon's monsters and be blessed with approval to create new official Pokemon in those video games, GameFreak's slop would be abandoned in a heartbeat.
