It's such a weird dilemma with Misty ships. Every incarnation had some form of shipping between her and Ash/Red/whatever protag at the time. The anime had it, Special had it, Electric Tale certainly had it. The newspaper strip had it. Other fringe mangas back then had it. It's like everybody involved with the franchise was onboard with such pairings except for the ones who had final say.
Red gets paired with an OC, Misty was kicked off the anime, and even her date in GS leaves her. She loses in every universe.
