How was I supposed to know about STAB as a kid?

I started playing Pokemon at 5 with Gen 1 but only found out about STAB in Gen 5 when I started having access to the internet.

No
If anything the anime taught me that when a pokemon uses moves from another type it's cooler and stronger than when it uses its own element
