That was just the anime interpretation of them. They did the same thing to the Yamato Nadeshiko Erika. Then two decades later the anime forgot how it portrayed Erika.

I actually find it interesting how most of the gen 1 human designs are interpreted differently in the anime. The few designs that stayed 1:1 were Blue/Gary, Professor Oak, Koga, and Bruno. Can’t say I would love it if they continued changing designs like that for gen 2 onwards, but it does make season 1 more charming.

Erika debuted before the anime was broadcast outside of Japan. And I don’t remember if there were any buddhist imagery removed from the anime, but the dub kept other religious references like Brock referencing Noah’s ark and Misty pulling out a cross against Ghastly. Also worth noting that Erika has been shown wearing normal clothes outside of gym duty in promotional gen 1 material and the TCG.

Red and Green were very dry games, the show and manga adaptations needed to add their own flavor to actually make an otherwise linear adventure fun to follow. My only gripe is that now a lot of laypeople only regurgitate things from the anime (e.g., protagonists are 10 years old).

Eh, even that I'd say is arguable. By the time Sugimori drew the Red/Green promotional art, Blue looked like how we usually think of him, but that look isn't fucking consistent with the sprite art in the original game that presumably reflects earlier concepts, with only the Champion sprite sporting the later iconic hairdo.
