I think that's a strong point. Jokes aside, if GF had created Orre, most of the region would have a temperate climate, forested with a small desert, a small jungle, a snowy area, an amusement park, and full of cities and happy people.

Part of a region's negative traits are what gives it identity, like New York, known for being the commercial capital of the world, but also known for its crime, its poor neighborhoods, and the street smarts of its inhabitants.

When GF removed that from Unova, it was left as a generic JRPG set. This FanGame (Close Combat) background has more of a New York spirit than all of Unova.

They have a fucking Lady Liberty/Justice Mecha that watches over the city, what could be cooler?

Hidden abilities were never a battle gimmick and they certainly were never ever an unovan thing neither in lore nor mechanics, they were just introduced in a gen with only Unova games and the next games and regions afterwards keep introducing them with zero connection to Unova.

I've really felt this replaying X. Even though it's france it's still meticulously set up so every area is the terrain that gives you the counter to the next gym

There are poison types in Skorupi and Haunters right before the fairy gym. But I agree that being given counters doesn't feel that bad, and is something all games did. Even first gen had Mankey before Brock, Oddish/Bellsprout before Misty, Diglett before Surge and even Growlithe/Vulpix and Doduo before Erika which isn't even necessary at that point.
The problem is that it feels like they really were just ticking boxes with stuff like the ice area and the desert which didn't really suit the rest of the region.

Ironically, Kanto handled this better with the Safari Zone. It's a reserve with an artificial climate that emulates biomes from distant regions like the African savannah, South American swamps, and the Australian desert. These types of open-air "zoos" are very popular in many countries.

In the remakes, they added an archipelago to the south that encompassed tropical climates, and with the Johto sequel, Mount Silver served as the perfect miniclimate for Ice Pokémon without being so forced.
