Regional forms threaten to overshadow the original if they end up being better in both battle and design, hence why the term “regional replacement” is a thing. With megas you don’t have to worry about that. Even if you’re better off using another mega in competitive battles, it’s still nice to see your favorite mon get a new toy to play with. In addition, megas still show up regularly in spinoffs like Master Sex and the upcoming Champions. Once a Pokemon gets a mega, it’s there to stay forever. It can’t be retconned like Ash-Greninja was.
