because they fundamentally misunderstood what made the first one distinct. PLA was a combat light game, clearly combat was not a sticking point for whatever fans the game has, why would you make the sequel a giant tournament?

Pokémon should separate PVP of mainline games. I hope Champions does that.

That way we have more ambitious games with newer ideas instead of the same "beat gyms bad guys league and credits roll."

As a fairly avid Pokemon GO player I loved the focus on catching each species many times that PLA had, that being said.

a game that introduces 26 new megas and fundamentally changes how battles work is also an easy sell for me

I'm still laughing at people who thinks the Legends series follows any type of pattern.

Oh the first game is set in the past so EVERY game must be set in the past. Oh the first game has a focus in capture so every game must focus on capture.

Legends is just a secondary mainline for GameFreak to do "whatever we want with the franchise" without crying losers to complain why they removed this RNG stupid mechanic of static gameplay only enjoyed by PVP tryhards.

The purpose is being experimental and see what they can bring to the main series.

I think the premise of ZA just isn't as interesting as PLA. I like PLA a lot, but I have to admit the historical setting did a lot of heavy lifting. Lumiose is...meh.
On top of that, it's reinforcing the idea that Legends is just a tech demo series, because instead of building on the core mechanics of PLA it seems to be going off in a totally new direction with the combat system. It really just makes it feel like Legends is their testing ground for new mechanics instead of being a consistent, growing series.
And they also announced it too early which has led to a long waiting period without a lot of news, slowing down the hype.

So, a few factors, it's a shame, I'm still cautiously optimistic cause PLA is the only Pokemon game I've really enjoyed in a long time, but it's hard to stay interested at this point.

I think the commonality to all Legends will be the freedom to re-explore and re-imagine what a given region has to be like, essentially giving second glances to a region from a different point of view instead of just remaking or remastering or rebooting it over and over

Anything that was "subpar" in the game were the usual Gamefreak Pokemon problems that people have complained about for years.
Putting those aside, the game was spectacular, and a very good sign of what could come next in the Legends franchise.
This new game having a completely different setting and a shift in focus towards battles; is very promising because it tells you that Legends came can take place at any point in time and have different gameplay.
In other words, Legends is not chackled down by a formula.

I feel like PLA doesn't really encourage you to use a set team like the main games do, you're constantly swapping out party members to fill out the dex, or at least I was.
also, I love PLA, but it's more of a one-and-done game than a game you replay a lot like the main series. I had a great time playing it, but after filling the dex to completion I don't really feel any need to go back to it. not everything needs to be in discussion forever. I had fun with the game, I moved on, that's all.

That it's also a long lock of years from Pokémania, yet besting Pokémania-era numbers shows how the market's grown (as non remake mid-Gen games barely sold 10m by 3DS, there we got 15m for a single title).

There's nothing to discuss, the gameplay is shit, the characters are extinct troon versions of other characters, the few battles there that are in the game suck ass, the maps are bland and empty, the story is boring, the bgm sucks dick. Horrible slop, and PLZA looks even worse.

that's not why though.
it's because the focus of the game is filling out the dex entries, and to do that you actually need to use the Pokemon, so you are swapping out mons a lot. but you'd know that if you actually played the game.
