So I dropped out of this franchise over a decade ago(only had Emerald and SoulSilver growing up, watched AG and DP on TV, lost interest at the start of Gen 5) but I've been considering getting back into it. Any tips?
According to /v/, Emerald, Platinum and B2/W2 are the "holy trinity" of good Pokemon games but I don't know if they're bullshitting or not.

Try Platinum, BW1, BW2 and any Alola game.
If you have a Switch there's PLA.

As for anime, there's Horizons and Concierge.

Anything after Gen 4 has progressively more lengthy cutscenes, and the writing varies greatly in quality but is generally on a downturn.
Gen 4 has a problem with performance that is marginally fixed with Platinum(as well as some Pokemon distribution.) If you don't mind having the slowest Pokemon game released, then don't worry about it.
Personally I'd recommend stopping at Gen 7, but I can't stop you from playing the others. As for Gen 7, you have your choice between either okayish writing(base) or difficulty(Ultra.) Don't play both, Ultra's a poor rehash and still cutscene heavy.
It's very unlikely to affect you, and you probably already know, but just in case I will also mention that they just arbitrarily omit Pokemon in any generation after 7. You can't have a full living dex or anything in those games, if collecting's your passion.
