In the modern day where both this and the originals are retro, the originals are actually better.
The level curve is worse here and most story additions just break the pacing. There’s up to gen4 Pokémon in the game files but you won’t really get them in the main story anyway.
The biggest thing for me is the rival story actually finishes here while the originals effectively drop the plotline.

Didn't like how Ho-Oh/Lugia were mandatory encounters instead of being rewards for exploring like in the originals. The Togepi egg being "haha we were secretly testing you all along :^)" instead of just an errand rubbed me the wrong way too. Great games other than that. Also following pokemon should've been toggleable.

For the Battle Frontier, there's an argument to be made there. But for wild encounters, Hoenn has a severe problem with the fact that half the region is just Tentacool. You'd think there'd be more different water encounters in a region with so many water routes.
There's also things like Sharpedo being needlessly late, but every region is guilty of that to some extent, so it's whatever.
I do love Emerald, don't get me wrong. But HGSS is just better.

i think they're objectively the best pokemon games especially when you include the pokewalker
but i find myself replaying crystal much more often, it's easier to revisit somehow

I really liked the follow-feature and the battle frontier
they should've given players the item that changes the music to the GBC earlier than after 16 badges but it's still cool

HGSS is the best Pokemon game in my opinion. Mainly because it has the best regions. Johto + Kanto is unmatched. The two best regions combined. That said, I wish HGSS had Secret Bases and Contests, instead of the PokeAthlon. It would have made the game perfect for my taste. Also, the following Pokemon feature is flawed. Making it obligatory makes it a flaw rather than a good addition.

Not really, Silver never gets a Magnezone or a Weavile, his growth as a person only gets expanded on in mobileshit and the champion battle music that plays for his final rematch in the originals was removed in the remakes.

Johto aged like shit. Even with speedup on an emulator, it's boring. Every positive addition HGSS got like cross-gen evos and Battle Frontier came from other games, mainly Sinnoh. Every feature it added was time-wasting fluff.

Pokeathlon was an interesting idea at least.

It looks like a cute Picross minigame at first but you either need to RNG manip or use a calculator tracking your DS clock to make Voltorb Flip worthwhile. I'd rather grind money and buy the coins or mash A in the Game Corner

Probably the Pokemon game I have the most fond memories for. It definitely helped that it was one of the few games that didn't gip me with third version nonsense (though that obviously isn't much of a problem anymore). Lugia feet.

I replayed crystal some months ago and never heard the champion theme against Silver, rematches on the league included.
