They stopped making third versions, because there's no chance people would pay $60 (and more going forward) for what essentially was 90% the same game as the lead Gen pairs, with some minor new routes and a slightly different story. They said as much when they announced the DLC, essentially a reason to revisit the older game and play it, as Platinum was an excuse to return to Sinnoh and play it being almost the same as the events of DP.
That Nintendo also mentioned Pokémon's DLC specifically in the financial report after its launch as majority reason why its digital-only revenue had seen such an increase on the year prior shows a greater engagement with DLC than third versions ever got, even in the paired third version releases like BW2 and USM.

But of course, DLC is essentially a mini-sequel of the game you can play before, during or after the original game, with enough of a loose story you can play it without much knowledge of the original story but some final connections that enrich the experience (not so much with Galar DLC but even that one had Calyrex story with the darkest day). DLC is objectively superior than enhanced versions in every way (digital vs physical debate aside)

ScarletViolet and SwordShield sales were already boosted by DLC while previous generations had to split their numbers between first and third versions.
And SV also got a 3-year window for sales that no game ever had.
So it's not possible to compare their numbers with the previous games, their situation was entirely different.

It's the fact you can buy it and add it on to your playfile (you can buy the package after both released and start the DLC early too, you know) rather than buying a whole new gamefile to play dude. Granted, they did write both as part taking place during the story and part set after the events of the main game but the draw was being able to even buy the ting to play alongside your game copy.

They sold more, because Switch sold more units to actual video game playing adults dude. We have a direct comparison to 154m DS units, but only 17.65m sales of DP (and less of BW) because unlike in Switch era, the adult gamers of the mid-2000's weren't buying Nintendo handhelds. 16.5m is the series baseline average, that is the number of kids+casual fuckers comfortable enough to buy a bit of a shitty handheld, to play a kid's game series. The fact we're seeing 26m today, after the Switch took off and sold to gamers instead of soccer moms, grannies and the casuals who migrated to mobiles when they saw the cost of a 3DS means ALL Nintendo IP's (even the ones they didn't directly create) are seeing an increase in sales.

Adding DP and Plt sales together still won't get you SS/SV and DLC sales though dude (we actually don't know the DLC sales thus can't extrapolate the exact number of game+DLC to game-only owners) But given the games alone sold 17 or 18m before DLC, it's very unlikely total DLC sales outweigh that initial figure (most people don't buy the DLC)
