Honestly you could take a game like Platinum, make every battle a double battle and buff enemy teams slightly and it would be much more challenging and enjoyable

I rly love Double Battles (XD/Colosseum fan here), and I would have loved that they give us an option to choose between Single and Double battles in general as long as we have at least 2 pokemon and the opponent too

If they're going to keep doing two versions of each game, they should have one version be all singles, and the other be all doubles, then have two different official competitive formats based on each game. The third version can be mixed singles and doubles. They'll never do that, though, because it would expose just how few people actually like double battles.

Doubles is a much faster format, which is why it was chosen as the one used in official events. Makes battles take less time so they can have more competitors in the same amount of time.
What's weird is that despite that, and doubles clearly being what the game is balanced around nowadays, it's still so poorly represented in the games. Yes, there's usually some battle facility with an option for doubles and maybe one gym leader whose gimmick is it being a double battle, but 99% of battles in the games are still singles. Seems a bit odd since if you're new player who wants to get into competitive battling the experience you've gained about the mechanics from playing the game is almost entirely focused on singles. From just playing the games, doubles comes across as a barely used gimmick, not THE main competitive format the game is actually balanced around.

This is correct but OP is just a campaignshitter who has no intention if ever playing PvP. He just wants his toddler campaign to be doubles so he can feel like he knows what he’s talking about without actually putting effort into being good at the game. This is why smogshit is so popular among campaignshitters, it’s the closest format to the toddler campaign so it makes campaignshitters feel like they’re knowledgeable when in reality they’re still complete shit.

>Doubles was made to make the battle system more interesting and is what GF actually cares about
>forced to keep single player content singles out of tradition and to keep the game accessible to kids
>focus on it being the main competitive mode instead since that crowd actually appreciates complex mechanics

VGC is only doubles for spectator value.
Double battles are usually shorter than single battles and VGC uses 4v4 format as well as capping levels at 50 where damage is slightly higher.
Keep in mind that VGC uses cart and also has animations always turned on. A typical singles battle on Showdown will take more turns than VGC but the animations are so short that they end up being shorter.
Now imagine if you had to play on cart with animations on and both players brought a stall team (which Trap abilities and Evasion being legal). Both players may enjoy it more and there are more decisions made throughout the match.
If you’re a viewer, this would suck since the match would last for so long and you would still need to do 3 games with the same team.

Even so, an aspiring new player who might want to dabble in the competitive scene would be forced into learning a completely different format that is almost nothing like what they've experienced just by playing the games normally. And the only exposure they have to them are the cheating AI in the /post-game/ battle facilities or, if GF is feeling particularly generous in the current generation, a few double battles scattered throughout the game (if it weren't for Indigo Plateau, S/V would've had the one gym and that's it).
I don't understand why doubles aren't more prevalent. One could argue performance issues as much as they want, VGC still has their tournaments on official hardware anyway, so what difference does it make?

Doubles battles should be the default after the 3rd gym in any Pokemon game.
By then you've learned quite a lot and it would give GF an excuse to start adding new moves at early levels designed for the doubles format rather than many of them bing late game.
