Some gen 1 names are really weird, because rather than being portmanteaus of various things it's often one part of the name being based on something and the rest being "idk it sounds cool I guess"
Marowak for example is called "Knogga", the "kno" part is from "Knochen" which means "bone" but the "gga" part refers literally nothing and just sounds cool. Lots of gen 1 names are like this, which has its own charm but it's weird in a vacuum
There's also Chikorita which is named "Endivie", which is literally just "endive". Not even spelled differently or anything, literally exactly like the vegetable. I think the localisation team gave up on that one and called it a day lmao
Trubbish is called Unratütox which was the first name with an umlaut. There's also one with an ß: Reißlaus (Wimpod)
Honestly most German names are pretty all right, there aren't a lot of crazy ones imo. Some are actually better than the English ones, I really like "Bisofank" for Bouffalant, from "Bison" and "funk". Decidueye has a way cooler name too, it's Silvarro which even works in English (silva (lat. for forest + arrow). The English name is really weird desu, never liked it
