X/Y really needed a Z to fix everything. They instead hurried onto the next game.
Sun/Moon really neded an overhaul in its pacing, which I don't think US/UM fixed.
I really liked the 3DS games. The cracks with GameFreak started to show, but I think they were still good games overall. They could have been amazing games if they were given more time and GameFreak put in more work, which is why I think they get overhated on. The missed potential is what hurts imo.

The amount of stuff that felt rushed through. It felt incomplete at times in terms of story and settings. A lot was good, but some moments and pacing moments made me think they cut out content in the 11th hour, like with AZ for example.

The power plants being nothing even though the game puts the player focuses on it, the importance of AZ in regards to the main story, the log cabin being flipped 90 degrees when knocked over in Geonsenge town, the animations of some Pokemon looking flat compared to the sprites in previous games, Zygarde getting story and lore in the next games. I am sure I am forgetting even more.

I'm not falling for it. I still stand firm in my conviction that Gen.5 was always dogshit. I will stand firm in all other judgements I've made of other generations as well. I go back and try these games again regularly to check--I was always right the first time. I'm currently replaying Pokemon Y, and just like the first time I played it, I find it overall decent but boring at times and comedically eager to throw stuff at you. Basically, it's the last time a mainline game managed to hit "mid" and they've been subpar ever since.
