and just wanting to get to the next gym battle or tournament episodes.

Adulthood is watching it back from scratch and realising the 'filler' episodes are actually more soulful, funny and wholesome than the gym/tournament episodes.

The actual good filler episodes mog the majority of gym and league episodes. However most fillers fall into the same formula of Ash and co walking through the forest, encountering some rando and their Pokemon related problem with TR intervening. Johto and DP had the worst fillers with this formula.

BW is probably the best example of it. The season was at its absolute best when the characters were just dicking around, but the "plot" episodes were usually meh.

A good example of that is when people complain about the league, but completely miss the fact that there was another "filler" tournament right before it that was functionally the real final tournament. All of the various character arcs throughout the series came to a head in that tournament, while the actual league felt like something the writers were just obligated to do afterward even though they'd already done their grand finale.

No, that's just dumb westerners not realizing this montage is taken from a Japanese opening and goes with the lyrics that are sung at that time.

They weren't meant to play a bigger role, they're just the most memorable non-Gym Leader characters Ash had battled against at that point.

Pretty sure Shudo mentioned that the show getting extended didn't really change anything as far as the writing was concerned, they just sent Ash on a new adventure after the league instead of ending the show. The entire point of the league arc was to tell the kids watching that "sometimes you DO lose, and when you do, you might want to reflect on WHY you lost". Having that be the actual ending of the show period would've just made the moral even more clear.

Shudo talked about how he wanted the anime to switch protagonists and have them each grow and learn lessons that were relevant to that time. I don't think they'd have stuck with the gym formula as long as they did with Ash regardless, or at least not make collecting badges as important to the protags goal.

Ash identifying Gary as this super important milestone and reality getting in the way and making Gary lose to some random shmoe before Ash got his super important destined battle against him is VERY Shudo. The universe isn't going to bend itself to match your main character syndrome, kiddies.

There's a reason Gary never appeared all that much in the show and the viewer never really got to see how skilled he was as a trainer.

That's basically what it should have been. The setting(badge, catches and evolutions as progress) basically writes half the story on its own. Its baffling that the only attempts at utilizing it come in manga form, if even that.

So what you're saying is that if Shudo remained head writer throughout the entirety of Johto then Gary would've lost in the Kanto league against some nobody, beat Ash after he won the Orange Islands and head to Johto, and then proceed to again job to some rando in the Johto league while Ash just continues with his day.

I agree. I really enjoyed how the anime writers started doing their own worldbuilding once the source material was finished. The Orange Saga in particular is full of those details, regional forms, size variations, double battles, and trials.

I especially remember the episode with the rancher Magnemite, explaining how he would take his "herd" to "graze" in thunderstorm-ridden plains only to be "milked" in the cities. He used a Jolteon as a sheepdog, and how he could differentiate the appearance and personality of each of his Magnemites. I think it's cute and clever.

I'm saying that Shudo's plans for Gary were very obviously just "Gary spends the entire series living rent free in Ash's head as Ash fantasizes about how glorious it's going to be when he finally beats the smug off his face, and then they both enter the final tournament and Gary just loses to some rando without Ash ever getting to battle him because that's life".

It's VERY in tune with his philosophy.

Shudo specifically said that despite being the show's head writer, he preferred writing one-off filler episodes about concepts he liked the idea of, while letting other writers handle the "important" episodes where Ash catches some new mon or beats some new gym or whatever, because anyone can write those.

My favorite Pokemon episode ever was random Johto Filler with Ash fighting competitive laptop "trainer" and his Scisor. The premise was cool, it actually showed Ash's greatest strengths as character, the fight was dynamic and crisp for late 90s (first ever use of digital painting in Pokemon anime) and in retrospection it work as callout to all calculationfags, pro-Nuzlockers and other faggots that play Pokemon by doing math for 3 hours before being assfucked by RNG.

This. When Shudo was discharged from hospitalisation in autumn 2000, he literally just wrote a bunch of “filler” episodes as backups for the staff, put down the initial proposal for AG (Misty leaves, Ash starts anew with Pikachu and a new girl) a few months later and left in spring 2001. He enjoyed writing filler as a way to flesh out the world. For example, the Diglett episode was meant to showcase the conflict between human progress and nature.

Some of the episodes he wrote back in 2000 were animated as late as 2002.

The fans who'd clamor for return of Ash and the Team Rocket trio would have lots of opportunities between GSC Kanto, FRLG, HGSS Kanto, PWT, Battle Tree, and LGPE.
Pikachu is likely why Ash stayed for so long, even Horizons couldn't resist adding one for that mascot recognition. The writers would've had to shoehorn a way to give each protagonist or some other main character a Pikachu. Maybe Hoenn or Unova would've tried to stray from it by using their pikaclones instead, but eventually return to Pikachu for whatever reason.

The movies and specials would be vastly different.
I doubt 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, and 17 would even exist due their reliance on legendary Pokémon that have roles in the main story should those anime follow the games better.
20 - 23 could get away unchanged.
The rest after 2 would have varying degrees of alteration, but I bet with most, you could replace Ash with anyone and the plot wouldn't change all that much.
We wouldn't have any of the Pikachu shorts after Rescue Adventure since the main cast is the Pokémon of the main characters.

The biggest boon to the anime retiring Ash as the protagonist earlier would be no Ash-Greninja, Battle Bond, and the Bond Phenomenon. The biggest loss would be losing out on the boss fantasies.

Genuinely I do not know how to feel about the anime. I watched the entire Indigo League + Orange Island seasons but as soon as PokemonTV got to Johto and in all honesty the thing that really burnt me out the most was that Team Rocket had to be the big bad literally every episode, even just for like 2 minutes before the plot went forward. I know it's a show for kids and kids get a kick out of familiarity but I mean come the fuck on, I didn't even like that as a kid.
Maybe watching 5 episodes a week also burnt me out of the series, that's a possibility too.

Nah even in the Japanese opening it's pretty weird. Like the lyrics act like they're all seriously "rivals" when like half of them were only in one single episode and never appeared again, or if they did appear again it was years after this opening. At one point in the song there's lyrics in the background that are like

The entire effect feels like trying to make these one-shot/minor characters feel much more important than they are.

Season 4 being from Whitney to Chuck is pretty telling. Ash needed a whole year to get 2 badges. Iirc, Hoenn and especially Sinnoh have similar gaps but they had subplots to break up the gaps and actually interesting filler.
