It's actually interesting that the rivals don't have different dialogue for male and female MC. I think they made it that way cause it's easier disguise as "they're just friends, wink wink". If they write dialogue with romantic intent, that intent becomes very obvious when it's only used on opposite gendered MCs. This way, it's more ambiguous.
