Flamigo is based off of an animal with a lot of weird quirks and extremely strange anatomy. A unique bill, a unique coloration, this weird habit of standing on one leg, a diet that mostly consists of algae that changes its color, the ability to fly despite its puny wings and very strange proportions (super long neck, super long legs, very squash body)…
Flamigo being “literally just a flamingo” essentially throws out all the possibilities that such an animal could have. Almost all animal repeats are of generic or well-known mammals, which flamingos are not, so it’s very unlikely there will be anything save for Flamigo.
Flamigo could have been some kind of type-changing Kecleon expy that changes type based on diet. It could have been some kind of comically long-necked serpent with hints of ourobourous on top of the flamingo stuff. It could have been so many fucking things, and yet all we got was a flamingo that can’t even breathe.
Eiscue is similar. A penguin with a frozen head isn’t particularly stellar, but it sets it apart from Empoleon and has potential. Almost every single fan redesign takes full advantage of this aspect, and comes out better for it.
Eiscue could have been some kind of arctic Excadrill, using its giant frozen head as a way to dig underneath the snow and hide from/defend itself from predators. It could have been some kind of unique hunter, using its icy head to float above water it would otherwise sink into and shooting prey out of the sky from some kind of icy cannon. It could have done so many things with the ice, even if the concept was already a bit shaky, and it just DIDN’T. It threw a cube on a normal penguin head and called it a day. Noice doesn’t even have the cube, it just has a sad face and a weird hair.
