On some level I agree and would say you had to be there to get why RBG blew up.
On another I think you could give a kid Pokemon Red or Blue today as an introduction to Pokemon and they're more likely to love it than not. It's a game that sparks imagination. The glitches, old and simplistic yet oddly convoluted design doesn't come anywhere close to ruining the experience.

I agree. People need to understand the gameboy library as whole is full of games that unironically play like tech demos and are typically just barebones versions of arcade games.
Very few handheld games have the scope of Pokemon (at the time).

Because compared it to other Game Boy games it was mind blowing. The few RPGs on the Game Boy were at most NES tier in complexity. Pokemon felt like its own living breathing world that you could just get lost in. It was massive, and there were all these nooks and crannies and corners, and you never knew what you'd find.
