Encourages playing boring fanfic metas over the official ruleset that GF balances for. The smogon council bans offensive pokemon like darmanitan, cinderace, dugtrio and dracovish, while stallmons like ferrothorn, who see much more usage in ubers, are kept. The move Baton Pass was banned from all smogon metagames because stall was completely unviable against baton pass supported sweepers.
Encourages cheating Pokemon instead of raising them yourself, because unlike cartridge, it is the ONLY option and has no barrier of entry.
Has actual gameplay inaccuracies in every gen that people don't talk about. For example (see comments):
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y9ZJKi3SjwBSS (official 3v3 singles) is about as balanced as Pokemon gets, and even if you want to argue (dubiously) that smogon singles is more balanced, the cost of constantly banning stuff is far more severe from a competitive perspective than the cost of things just being allowed to be powerful. Like if [insert Pokemon here] is really great and is on 40% of teams or whatever, it's not really clear why this is a problem in need of an action other than perhaps adding that Pokemon to your team. It's quite clear that the politics of constantly banning things is pretty toxic and adds generally awful social aspects to the metagame (convincing people the gameplay of your favorite thing is good becomes something you have to care about); I just can't see after having played so many different games why any community would ever favor a constant banning process over just having powerful game elements everyone can deal with together.
All in all, the game would be better off if Smogon got DMCA'd by Nintendo.
