What is the in-universe explanation for why Charmander suddenly thinks Ash is unworthy upon evolving?

If it was Squirtle or Bulbasaur, it would make sense. Both of them were leaders in their community. But Ash saved Charmander's life. Shouldn't he have a stronger bond?

Its a refence to how traded Pokemon will disobey you if you don't have enough badges. Why a Pokemon should care about a bit of plastic who knows? and why it still disobeys Ash even after he has all his badges who knows?

It always felt like an awkward adaptation of a game mechanic. On paper, it's a cool storyline, Charmander starts off as this rescued, gentle Pokémon (he's basically the kid of the group in Island of the Giant Pokémon), and then evolves into the strongest, most disobedient, and arguably least reliable team member. He almost becomes a kind of counterpart to Pikachu's evergrowing bond with Ash. But the transition was way too sudden. They really should've made the disobedience arc more gradual, starting while he was still a Charmander and stretching it out with more episodes as a Charmeleon. That would've made the shift feel more natural and emotionally grounded.

Charmeleon felt pride that it was able to evolve under Ash's guidance, but then Ash started expecting him to job to absolute shitters like Paras just so they can feel better about themselves while failing to consider how Charmeleon himself might feel about it. It felt like just because Charmeleon evolved, Ash was suddenly treating him differently, which probably led to a traumatic response given how he was abused by his previous trainer.
But overall, this stung hard enough that it's why he continued to disobey even after Ash got eight badges. This is undeniable proof that it was NEVER about badge count like how "game mechanic integration" fags would lead you to believe when the anime specifically went through measures to tell the audience they're detaching themselves from being EXACTLY how the games work with Onix getting mogged by Pikachu triggering the sprinklers, and the episode about the elitist academy where every battle is done through videogame simulations.

It was a reference to actual ingame mechanics where an overleveled pokemon won't listen to you without gym badges. Ash did have a lot of gym badges but many were either given to him, or he got lucky, or he had a really good strategy. Being a good strategist in the TV universe doesn't mean you're a good trainer though, and Ash still had a lot of growing to do at that point.

at first it could've been seen that way since Ash didn't have all 8 at the time and that Charmander wasn't his to begin with but after 8 badges if we're going by game logic, all pokemon will obey your command no matter what and lo and behold CHARIZARD broke that logic by continuing to ignore him.
However this could also be explained by the fact that he didn't actually "earn" a most of his badges were pity badges. So you could in theory say if you didn't actually earn it through battling, Any Pokemon would be able to tell this somehow from the get go and will choose to ignore you.

BW explained Charizard’s behavior that Pokemon sometimes change personality when they evolve. Dawn’s Mamoswine also stopped listening to her when it evolved and it kind of happened with Goh’s Scorbunny and Sobble.

As others mentioned - it was mix of rebellious phase, Ash repeatedly damaging Char's pride and games having similar mechanic.
It think it was a fine way to show that despite everything, Ash was still an unfettered shithead and that Pokemon can have their own personalities. Char wanted fights against exceptionally strong opponents but hated when Ash was bothering him with bs like jobbing to Paras or fighting against random-ass Pikachu.

I’m fairly certain that they mention this in Kanto as well. Though both Mewtwo and Oak tell Ash that Charizard wasn’t properly trained which if he had spent time training him before the league started then he could’ve saved himself the embarrassment.
