Your digimon dying and resetting prevents you from just overleveling and facerolling the game. Retraining them and not knowing what you would get kept the game fresh.
The open world was just the perfect size with all the themes you could think of. That paired with the recruit/progress system where you never knew who you were going to find, how are you going to recruit, and what are they going to do in the city.
It's engaging from start to finish and no other RPG comes close.
