I don't understand this line in particular. Most people speculate that Tobias has an Entei with the OP hinting on it. How the heck would a Gible's Draco Meteor beat it? Even against Latios, I can't see Gible one-shotting it either. Was Tobias just playing pretend to make Ash feel better?

This is right when the anime became a total laughing stock. All of Ash's losses were believable up until this point. Even worse the championships he did win were against far worse opponents. Lycanroc vs. Lycanroc? Leon and his dumb Charizard? Come on. Ash vs. Cynthia would have been the perfect place to end Ash's segment of the story, and a new protagonist would have made BW's total reset make sense. But this is TPC and OLM we're talking about. They're about as creative and daring as U2 after 1997.

Draco Meteor was built up to be like a Hyper Beam level kind of attack during those days, but I think he wasn't as much commenting on his team but on the power level of his Darkrai considering it won solo through the tourney up to that point. I would've done without a line like that though yeah. Kind of tonally conflicts with Heracross and Sceptile getting where they did, and also makes it seem like Ash would have done better to save Gible for after Darkrai went down if Draco really did beat anything else.

I was with you until you said Ash vs Cynthia would've been the perfect place to stop. It had to either be Lance as a nod to Kanto as Ash's home region or a new big boss character, and they chose the latter by creating Leon to be new/relevant, strong, and represent Ash's roots (Charizard). Steven, Cynthia, Alder/Iris, and Diantha would all be non-meaningful arbitrary fights to end it with. The perfect battle already happened when Ash got his full fight with Gary back in Johto where he actually beat him, which is why I'm on board with the idea of the anime falling off around that time period.

to me, sinnoh always felt like the "finale" of the japan-based area of the poke world
it has creation myths, it has the most pre evolutions and evolutions for previous regions, a challenging champion compared to the previous ones
by that time, he has enough well trained mons
pikachu, sceptile, infernape, just three more picks and it's all set
i hated how at the beginning of bw anime, that pathetic yellow rat loses to a starter snivy even without its electric powers
that pikachu must be very high level compared to a snivy that was just handed out to a new trainer, so it's just retarded

The thing is that Lance was never particularly associated with Kanto in the anime. When he's first introduced in the gen 2 anime, it's as "the champion of the Elite Four" (pre-gen 3, the implied canon was that there was only one Elite Four in the entire world), but when he returned for FRLG shilling purposes in gen 3 they mostly just referred to his "Pokemon G-Man" title the anime had come up with. It wasn't until fucking 2019 the word "Kanto" was used in reference to him.
