I guess people mostly just watch it to see Pokemon with actual animation instead of whatever rotating/translating shit they do in the games, plus you got some people watching for the girls, I don't know.
Watching the anime was always a bit hit-or-miss for me over the years because of how annoyed I got sometimes about Ash's competency varying wildly per episode, but the new series just doesn't click at all.
