It's like 10 FPS, and that was for the trailer which should be showcasing its best. I can tell you as someone who can't tell the difference between 24 FPS and 120 FPS, if I notice it, you know it's bad

you touch on the issue but you don't quite arrive there. in the time they spent developing their Souls ripoff, they developed 5 Pokemon games. the dev cycle for Pokemon is just too short to ever come close to a decent game. but when it sells gangbusters anyway, why should they adjust? release a game every year for 20 million sales, or spend 5 years making a game for 40 million sales. may as well just keep pumping em out to fund the games they actually want to make.

Graphics are not what is holding Pokemon back. It's a combination of short dev cycles, scope creep, and concept creep. They work on a game for a few years then release it, finished or not. If Pokemon stays as an RPG, it needs to change. The core appeal is creature collecting and training to fight tougher battles. They have truncated the training aspect with exp share, neglected battling for advanced players, and made it to where you can't collect your favorites anymore. We have over a thousand mons, but I still can't use Starmie.

I have no idea how accurate this claim may be, but there are people that will say it's not necessarily all GF's fault. TPC supposedly sets strict timetables and GF is expected to have games ready to coincide with the merchandise side of the business. Games need to launch, ready or not, is the speculation I've seen. I think it would be fascinating to see what GF would do with a Pokemon game under the "Mario Wonder" philosophy: no development deadlines, play around with ideas and concepts, no matter how crazy and seemingly impossible, and build multiple test programs just to play around with each idea to see if it has promise.
Obviously, development deadlines do serve a purpose, but I think there's merit to finding a middle ground, somewhere between the Mario Wonder approach and TPC's timetable expectations that require the games, merch, anime, and so on, to all lineup.
Of course, sales for both Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet suggest TPC does not need to do this, so...

The closest we've gotten so far was Legends Arceus, which at least had gameplay ideas even if the execution varied (catching Pokemon being an actual system instead of just a mechanic is good, circle strafing and throwing rocks is not).

I'll say this as someone who was excited about their new game prior to the trailer they have shown: this new game looks like one of the most boring and uninspired titles GameFreak has ever put out. I was intrigued by the idea of them trying to make an action game with a japanese style setting and I imagined thet would have pulled a game that would stand out from the crowd without looking too kiddy, but no, this looks like Temu Nioh with forgettable robot designs.
I remember a lot of their previous games, if not by name then by graphics. This one otoh is only being noticed because it looks 'good' compared to SV's shitty graphics. It's doomed from the start to just be forgotten trolling fodder unless it's a really good game.

Think of it this way: if it were developed by Capcom, FromSoft or Koei Tecmo, nobody would be giving a shit, especially with Ninja Gaiden 4 and Nioh 3 on the horizon to fill similar niches. Nothing about this game really stands out and it's huge shame.
