That's why Nintendo has some ownership of Pokemon.
If Gamefreak decided not to operate under Nintendo, they'd fold without Pokemon. Nintendo would fuck them. Hard.

They sold in Pokémania, when Nintendo was making them (thus they were actually GOOD) but as soon as TPC took over and Pokémania ended, the only audience for them was retard kids who were also expected to buy the core games and about 600 quid's worth of tech to get the "Full" experience (regardless if that was colo or my pokémon box RS). As the years passed and crucially, mobile gaming emerged, they were on a timer. No point making a game for 2-3 years, having to pay people wages and expenses and contributions, only for the game to flop and the companty to eat the cost. Can't beat 'em, join 'em biut also, there's PLENTY of cunts out there don't care about Pokémon beyond Game Freak, hence why Game Freak assigned senior staff to aid Niantic developing GO and why GO, made in part by Game Freak was the first mobileshit game revealed by TPC (because, seriously. Can you imagine if they tried to lead with Masters?). Mobile gaming is cheap to develop and fucking prints money, if you have the right idea (Pokémon, but even MORE on-the-go that the series' long-term handheld home crossed with toilet break paper ball throw games).

Game Freak hold devrights to the series. If they WANTED, they could fuck off from Nintendo, continue creating things in the vein of their pokémon ethos but renamed something entirely different and probably continue on to some modicum of success, fucking Nintendo in the process (ie not owning the rights to the games, thus being unable to just "copy" GF style and continue the cash cow).
They're just as intent on continuing the rodeo alongside Nintendo for as long as it's humanly possible to, had ample time at EVERY stage over the last 35 years (including total devtime of RG) and still ended up doing what they did, because Tajri created something wholesome and innocent, that has been proven to replicate its success with its target market continuously year-after-year, unlike most games and series.
