Game Freak didn’t want to make Pokémon anymore so they made GSC an unplayable boring grindfest with a broken level curve full of shitmon, moeblobs, and babies, so that people would hate it and Nintendo would end their contract and let them make something other than Pokemon. It almost worked since GSC succeed in killing Pokemania but a tiny handful of Johturds astroturfed just enough sales to trick Nintendo into thinking people actually likes Gen 2 so Game Freak was forced to keep making Pokemon forever

Probably because gold and silver are underwhelming games and it just doesn't make sense that everyone who played them thought they were great. Saying things like, I didn't watch digimon I was playing pokemon doesn't make sense either. Since you personally never dropped pokemon for digimon, does that mean no one did? Those numbers only showed that Pokemania was dying by 2000 and was essentially dead in 2001. Pokemon movie 3 did really poor at the box office but I think most people liked the 3rd movie. Of course, you forgot to factor in the fact that its not surprising that a third revision game that was just a mild upgrade of a game customers bought last year didn't sell well. Its not surprising that a game on a dying console was dying when the GBA was on the way. Its also not surprising that Pokemania was a fad that was going to die after 3 years of existing. Most fads don't last long.

Note that even though Pokemania died, GSC were still one of the best selling games for the platform, alongside RSE.

A fad only becomes a fad because it dies. Cell phones are not a fad, they're part of society. Or 3D animated movies. Like Toy Story, it wasn't a fad it's now how all animated movies are made. Pokemon could have become a fairly common thing in society. It all depended on Gold and Silver out performing red and blue, which it did not. And there's very valid reasons for it.

They had leaks in TCG magazine and online (pikablu) and I was theorizing hard about the new mons. Probably one of the hypest prereleases I ever encountered. You are such a mentally ill faggot you actually went to Gamefaq just to pretend you can prove a point by getting a bunch of posts made in the 2010s when in the end of the day, none of them say its a bad game. Nor are their critiques exclusive to GSC, if you criticize a game for not having good places to grind, you can apply that to alot of other Pokemon games. Its a good example of how most of this gen hatred is bad faith. Many of the criticism are just objectively, not that important in the grand scheme of things, nor are they intrinsic to Gold/Silver themselves. It is noteworthy how very few criticism actually attack G/S/C itself as a game, but the reason they don't do it, is that any valid critical criticism of G/S/C would also be a critique of the Pokemon formula itself.

You have to do that because you cannot debunk the notion that the games were well-received, because in the year 2000, the average fan and gaming press gave this games a good reception.

Pokemon had it comparatively easy all things considered, but some of that did come from Masuda taking the reigns late into Gen 2's development. The fact that Gen 3 is the best selling game on a handheld that sold poorly is a more important metric to me than anything else, and the consistent sales before the Switch Era (and consistent sales during it) tell me they converted just fine. If you consider it being the most sucessful media franchise of all time to be a failure, then sure whatever. I wish I got Satoshi Tajiri's Gen 2 instead, personally, but the Gen 2 we got is a lot better than most of the modern games so whatever.

Nah m8, kids played whatever, kids watched both Pokemon and digimon, kids mostly had Gameboys so they played Pokemon while the rich kids played Digimon and you had to be invited to play with them, when GS came out it was super cool how Pokemon can now hold items, had day and night cycles, and could connect with old games.The only disappointment at that time was Ash losing the league and the younger kids getting confused by Digimon's plot suddenly involving the devil and separating the gang, otherwise everyone carried along.

People just looking at the raw numbers don't understand how bad this looks for Game Freak themselves. 23 million looks high, but it's coming off a 26% decline in sales. With how much hype Pokemania allegedly generated, that is a horrible performance. No, it was actually RSE that almost killed all interest I had in the series because you couldn't transfer your pokemon, it was the first Dexit, and on top of that the back half of the game is a total slog. Gen 4 was phenomenal though, a return to form, and then gen 5 was a steep drop off a sharp cliff, and the series never recovered, just getting worse. I skipped the 3DS I hated BW/BW2 so much, and I say this as someone who played a fan translated BW2 rom of the japanese version. Those games just have no sauce and cut so many features from Platinum and HGSS.

I disagree and do agree with OPs video that said pokemon like qwilfish and stantler didn't help. Those are lame pokemon. Straight up, they're duds. A blowfish and a deer. That's not cool. This literally only happened during Gens 3 to 4, specially the former. During Gen4, the popularity of the DS coincided with the tryhard edgy children that shunned Pokémon during Gen3 maturing just enough to realize how stupid they were- so the first resurgence happened during this era, even if only among gamers. But during Gen3? There was both the belief that Pokémon was too kiddy compared to YuGiOh!- and other things that aimed at older children- and those that were alienated by not being to transfer from Gen2 (among other flaws of Ruby/Sapphire). THAT was the period of time when you could be forgiven for thinking that Pokémon as a whole was dying, as you would rarely even see children playing it at home- you'd see more people playing RSE later, during the DS era.

The numbers in >>57898304 reflect all of that, so you can't claim this was just how I saw things. The reactions to Gen3 are part of the reason people thought they were trying to end the series on a high note with Gen4... before Gen5 was announced.

You can see the drop off in ticket sales from movie 2, 3 and 4. The 4th and 5th did so poorly that the 6th was direct to video. Also, yu-gi-oh came out before RSE, it was competing against GSC for it's first couple years. You're way off on the stuff you're saying.

If Hoenn and Sinnoh stood on its own the sales figures would have reflected that and they never would had to make remakes of Kanto. Gen 5 sold the worst because it had no Kanto at all, gen 6 is when they realized they need Kanto to succeed. The point is, Kanto is the only region AT ALL that can stand on its own. Gen 1, Kanto, Pikachu, Charizard, that IS Pokemon and everything else feels like an imitation. They know this, and that's why Pokemon GO started out with just the original 151. That's why Journeys and Horizons are both primarily Kanto.

GS were "flops" because sales declined form 31 million to 23 million....a ridiculous standard given that with this same logic, RS were even bigger flops because it declined form 31 million to 16 mil. But it gets even more ridiculous in context because none of these numbers are bad, these are amazing sales that basically beat out almost the entire competition on their respective platform. Most people seem to agree Houdour, Slugma, Murkrow ect. all should have been in Johto. I wouldn't say putting them later killed Pokemania, but it is an interesting point to think about. Digimon gives you new monsters every episode. Monster Ranchers whole thing is just checking CDs for monsters. Pokemon GSC is about really hidden new pokemon that you won't find easily at all.

I'm 33 and lived through pokemania as a kid, it was aimed at. GSC was so fucking cool because it was drip fed to use, so secret rumors of pikablu, etc. were eventually true and real. Everyone i knew loved Gold and Silver. I think Pokemania died down because nothing lasts forever. Pokemon is currently the highest earning media franchise in the world so Pokemania probably never died. The next thing just came so Pokemania was just kinda out on the back burner. People played the games but it wasn't like an all in one media experience like before. I actually remember playing Black and White in the 8th grade of the bus with everyone. X and Y was actually a huge thing when that dropped. I was in high school and people started buying 3DS' to play X and Y. I still think Pokémon saved the 3ds.

I am all for outside the box, non-sweeper pokemon. But god damn, give them an attack just in case? Jumpluff to me is an example of them carrying too much about the "lore" and what moves a pokemon should have based on its biology. It's a floating seed. So it can't learn razor leaf or gust. Gen 3 did kind of come in with aerial ace and moves like that to shut down lorefags.

I think zoomers are really engaged with being active participants in media narratives. Social media at least lets you feel like you are one of the hands on the wheel steering to what is deemed true. The video doesn't really shit on GSC. It talks way more about the landscape around 2000 and how competitive it was media wise. It harps on the anime for lacking johto pokemon more than the games and frames the anime against other animes. Essentially pokemon got cluttered by other media and ones that constantly showed off new monsters. I don't know why it took him 30 minutes to say what I typed out though.

They were so cool, I showed them to my friends and they thought they were fake.

A few months later I met a teenager who had imported a copy and got to play some and was so hyped for it.

I think this topic shows why people are compellted to talk about. So many people didn't bother to watch the video, it almost feels like bait to even post. When people argue about gen 2 and why it was good, bad, whatever, they talk about sales and they talk about things in the pokemon franchise. The thing about the video I do like is going over how pokemon didn't exist in a vacuum. Would gold and silver have sold 10m more copies if digimon wasn't a thing? Maybe 5m more? Who knows. This question does end up being self-selecting in exactly the way it has played out here: the Johto advocates' opinions mean very little because the question is trying to figure out why people LEFT. There is an entirely different trajectory this franchise could have taken if Nintendo further strong-armed or outright absorbed Game Freak and got out that sequel game out in 1998 as planned. The anime and other franchise elements would never have stalled out, the fire would be rekindled while it was still hot. And even if we presume that this would only delay a significant drop off to Gen 3 instead, that decline would have occurred from a stronger position. (Well, EVEN stronger position).

I like Gold and Silver as we got them quite a bit; their supplementary nature is disappointing in some ways, charming in others. I do wish they got to be more than they were.

There are so many posts ITT about how everyone in their school loved Gold and Silver upon release and Pokemania was going strong. The video is a direct contradiction of that but I think they were expecting something like that Pokemon Challenges video.

My theory is the anime was intentionally stalling due to complications with GS's development and avoiding too many spoilers, which would have been a stupid move considering the anime was the major source of the hype. No one I knew was pissed from discovering Pokemon from the anime. If they didn't slow the pace down the decline wouldn't have been as bad.

I agree, a trickle of newcomers would have been something. But I wonder how many finalized new Pokemon they even had. I feel like they would have done that if they could. Likewise I wonder if they were in a better position in development when they teased new Pokemon subsequent generations, or if whatever makes it past the post first gets the cameos. Keckleon showed up in the anime a year and half before Ruby and Sapphire released.

Masuda had to take over Gen II's development because Tajiri had a breakdown, and they ended up scrapping a lot of beta shit and virtually starting over. They were basically just in survival mode trying to cobble something together to ship. Then the very next gen they make what is now considered the best gen of all time.
