scarlet/violet are very buggy and had a lackluster open world with some washed out visuals. they're not bad games per-se, they're just more story-focused than gameplay-focused.

pokemon sword/shield are primarily review-bombed for being the games that introduced "the dexit." where they removed the ability to have every pokemon from the mainline games, but a lot of people just didn't like how they played, alongside their graphics.

BDSP are legitimately just a buggier, chibified version of the original diamond and pearl but with faster battles, a competitively viable cynthia team, lower difficulty before the elite four, and no HMs.

all of these games are still good games, but they're not exactly "the favoured games" unlike the stuff that came before them.
they're all worth playing, but I wouldn't suggest buying them for over $45.

The open world was mostly not needed and only serves exactly one gameplay element, other than that up until the Switch 2 came out it was mostly just the cause of severe frame loss. On Switch 2 it plays great.

People were mad at this game due to the dexcut despite this game not being the first to enact it, and people were upset about a lack of a specific postgame despite this game having good DLC that covered it more or less. Also people were upset about this game getting DLC over a rehashed third version. In general, people made up things to be upset about (never forget the NAND scares).

Actually broken game that was coded extremely quickly when TPCi found that Legends Arceus was going to be too drastic of a remake for fans to release alone.

Legends wasn't going to be a remake full stop. They pivoted and adapted it when they saw brainless retards screaming for a remake, to not be left out the remake club with the genwunners, johtoddlers and hoennbabs, so greenlit BDSP (free easy money vs the risk that Legends was panning out to be) and adapted the initial project to act as both sequel and prequel to DPPt/BDSP.

Boomer here. I hadn't played any Pokemon game since Gold/Silver, but during covid I played all of them except for the 3DS games (X/Y and Sun/Moon) and Legends.

Scarlet is just a janky piece of shit that apparently runs incredibly poorly on the Switch. I played it on emulator at 60fps, but I pity the fools who had to play it on actual Switch hardware. It's fine. I thought it was kinda cool, but I don't think I'd ever play it again. It was the first game I played since Gold/Silver.

Sword/Shield was fine. Maybe people hate it because it's incredibly linear? I know the kids these days love the "open world" buzzword, which is why Scarlet even exists in the first place I think. I actually liked Sword/Shield more than Scarlet/Violet. Then there's Brilliant Diamond, and I think the issue with those games is just that they're Remakes that are somehow worse than the originals. That's what I gathered from my research anyway. I ended up playing Renegade Platinum on a DS emu.

Sun and Moon (and USUM too i guess) are pretty fun for a first time playthrough. Definitely my favorite region and imo the prettiest out of any pokemon games. X and Y were pretty great when they came out, but a lot of what made them great was the PSS, so a few years after when barely anyone was online (and even moreso when online support was cut), the games dropped in quality a lot. 3ds emulators are pretty easy to get working.

In gen 3 you could get a gameshark or action replay and hack in whatever old pokemon you wanted to use at least. That at least had the excuse of being a one-off experimental game to try to get the massive casual Go audience (who mostly only knew the original 151 from being either boomers who moved on after gen 1 or totally new) to buy the main series games. But swsh? That was touted as "the game for the hard core fans" and follows the traditional formula, it was supposed to be the big polished home console game that we were all waiting for, and they went and half-assed it without at least the consolation of letting players still move over all their old pokemon for online battles, raids, and post-game facilities.

Back in the day Game Freak/TPC/Nintendo still cared about their long-time fans enough to take the backlash to gen 3 seriously and make sure you wouldn't have to start over again from gen 4 forward instead of just telling everyone "tough shit", but that attitude has been shifting since the 3ds and is almost dead with the switch. Bank already sucked since there was no reason it shouldn't have just been local storage for a one time purchase like box and ranch before it since it was tied to your system/account and therefore could only be used on one device at a time anyways. Home was just an insult with how few pokemon could even be moved out to a game when it launched and how much it costs relative to its storage capacity and feature set. If you want to have your favorite pokemon and it's not pikachu, eevee, or magikarp then you've got to do some research to find out if it's even coded into the game you're about to buy when it used to just be a matter of WHEN you could obtain it.

As someone who's been through all the generations:

Gamefreak has always tried to maintain a small/medium developer culture and recent leaks of their planning documents and progress reports show it. You could see cracks forming, especially once they started making Pokémon a worldwide release instead of a Japanese game that came out a year later overseas with bug fixes.

The short version of Sword and Shield is that they put the game out a year after Breath of the Wild and decided to not program in Pokémon that weren't in the regional Pokedex. They tried to do a positive spin on it by saying it allowed them to focus on graphics and talked about things that stayed in the planning documents like Minor and Major leagues for Pokémon gyms. However, in the end you got a linear Pokémon game with an open field between the first and second set of gyms that didn't look like Breath of the Wild. Also some people started coughing or something a couple months after launch and had a lot of time to drop 0/10 reviews as if the twitter campaign wasn't enough.

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl was outsourced to another company and the art direction was trying to mimic the Link's Awakening remake art style if not their own chibi looking thing. Previous remakes like HeartGold, SoulSilver, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire and Let's Go Pikachu had put great efforts into adding little side activities and modernizing their games to match the current generation, but it was just a remake of the originals with the newer Fairy type added. The expanded single player content from platinum was also not added (battle facility) and a newer friendship mechanic that would randomly have your pokemon hold on or shake off a status condition alongside exp share made others rage about not being hard enough.

Scarlet and Violet should not have released until the Switch 2 was out.

That literally only happened once and was due to Game Freak scuffing Pokémon 2 and handing in Blue, a bug/sprite fix that subsequently got localised as "Red and Blue" for the international market, to see if success be replicated. Every other game has been the master code the Japanese got, regardless when the localised versions launched (because by Gen 3, they were in a pattern of being able to shit out a game every year, due to starting them earlier and not doing much with rehashes beyond a few new hallways. And only for fucking the wi-fi capabilities in gen 4, it would have continue the fucking pattern).

I was 20 and the idea of cheating in a kid's game was laughable in the extreme. Still is today. Can cheat in a Lv 1 Raidon with your OT and secret id number in SV and use that instead of the starter options either. Neither are actually interesting to me.

Genuinely, what were they supposed to do? The old gb/gbc and the new gba used different link cable pinouts and there's no way Nintendo's engineers were going back to the drawing board to support a single game with a dubious future. Given they bothered with the time capsule instead of making you start over in gen 2 it's clear they would have supported trading between gen 2 and 3 if it was a viable option at the time.

Dexit. Singlehandedly shifted the franchise and exposed the shills for who they are. If you want to try it out, go for it. GF has no plans on undoing Dexit after SwSh (and SV's) success.

Dude I started with gen 1 and lost my original collection too. It sucked, I cried, I tried using my and my sister's gba to get around the hardware limit with blue, silver, and again with crystal because "maybe the last game added something for this, they sell some gba bundle with it", I rushed through sapphire hoping it was locked behind beating the champion, then I tried the battle tower I even tried reading up on electronics thinking I could solder some wires and old computer chips together to fix it myself (obviously never got that far, I was 13 at the time and the books I borrowed from the library were well above me) and ironically someone out there DID manage to build and code an accessory to trade between gen 2 and 3 decades later now that the information and tools are widely available.

I feel for your loss, anyone here over 30 does. However you acting like what happened back then is so much worse than what happened with the jump to switch and only one is valid shows a level of emotional immaturity that has me wondering how you manage to hold down a job, I can only imagine how bad you must suck to work with if you're like this about something as simple as data in a game. How hard is it to go "that sucks, I remember when my shit got cut off and the save batteries eventually died, I thought we were past that bullshit and nobody should be unable to have their favorites now" instead of bitching that kids these days aren't hurting enough? One was the reality of a dying fad not having the influence to make it happen, the other was a deliberate choice to be scumbags when it's purely a software issue. Now you can get a cart dumper to move your save files to the 3ds vc re-release and use bank to transfer them over legit, it'd be nice if that was an option back on the ds when people's carts still had some juice in the batteries, but at least they gave us that much.

If the fact it's not YOUR charizard or nidoking or whatever is a bigger problem than the pokemon not being in the game at all so they're sitting in storage then you weren't going to use them anyways. Some of us actually want to play with them not just have their summary screen in an app. Ideally we should be able to use them AND keep the ones we raised. Some people getting screwed, even if it WAS worse then, doesn't mean others deserve to get screwed now too.

If the internet wasn't full of retarded little children, they'd educate themselves as to the issues 3D development has, when added to a series with over a thousand individual unique creatures. As it is, it's 2,195 days and counting and they're still crying instad of using any jiffy of those last 2,195 days to learn about 3D development, hell even learn to code, if they're still so young and to not have rock-rigid brains like 20-somethings up do.

In reality, the games aren't super great and do have more visual bugs than their predecessor, but they are much better than the previous gen (which has higher scores).
