The reason is that the monster themselves are not 3d rendered models but sprites. The world is full 3D with a forced camera angle sure and some effects also make use of simple 3D effects but people do not consider post GBA core games 3D until XY because the sprites.

Gen 4 avoids doing cool camera tricks like Gen 5 and Gen 6 do for the most part, so it's easy to forget when you're sitting in the same angle the whole game

imo classics are 1-4, but nu is only 7+ (either as of SM or after USUM, but no later than 'as of LGPE').
5-6 are intermediate, hence all the sperging between those two sister gens.

It's just slang. What people clearly mean is that the battles are no longer sprites but use Gen 6+ 3D models. Gen 4 and 5 would be sprite based games, and the people claiming otherwise immediately contradict themselves when they start posting about 5's battle sprites vs 6's animations. It's just more games these genwar autists play to demoralize you on the DS games.

People play pokemon for the collectible monsters. It's the defining iconic feature of the series. The most centered aspect of every main series pokemon game are the battles involving the pokemon, and the pokedex. This is what 99% of players spend the vast majority of their time focusing on. Therefore these pokemon being the heart and soul of the series are what people attribute to defining a game being "2D" or "3D". The 2D era was when the pokemon in the battles were drawn using 2D sprites. The 3D era was when the pokemon in the battles took a decline from sprites and became rendered as 3D models. Nobody ever cared about a cutscene or a tree or building in the overworld. So yes, Gen 1-5 are the 2D era, and gen 6+ are the 3D era (pbuh).

Gen 1 is 3D Pokemon due to Pokemon Stadium being the natural final destination of all Gen 1 games, serving as their effective postgame and ideal place for PVP.
Same with Gen 2 and Stadium 2.
Gen 3 is the only 2D Pokemon generation because Colosseum/GoD don't serve that same purpose.
