No, it's irritating. Ash gives away or largely neglects to use anything but the starters and pikachu until the very end of the indigo league. And the weird "background pokemon can only be pokemon that have already had an episode" thing they do. So the first 25 episodes have nothing but pidgey, rattata, sandshrew, and occasion the starters running around when there are 146 different pokemon they could have used. Ash magically becomes trainer god after Sabrina, only really losing when it's funny to or it's been a few episodes since he's had a serious moment.
