Water is the best type for ranged damage. Iirc Bubble and Bubblebeam have more range and the speed dropping chance over Water Gun. Water Pulse is also great. Ice also has a lot of ranged attacks.
Usually boosting your speed lets you move/act X number of times, where X is your speed multiplier. Attacking will always finish your turn though, so move and then attack after you move. Chaining speed boosts like with Agility also lets you move or get advantageous positions.
Remember how good room hitting moves (Earth Power, Silverwind, Ominous Wind which can also get the omniboost) are broken on anyone, friend or foe.
