Paul's return was one of the few kino moments of the entire M8 arc. He matured in believable and enjoyable way - he changed his priorities and while he's still rather strict and cold, now it's showed more like a behavior of stern teacher that grinds his students because he wants good for them. Also, his side team that he put together just to give Ash a lesson was composed of mons used by champions and it was stated that they were as strong as real deal, showing that he's far above Ash in terms of ability to use Pokemon's potential.

Making Ash lose the Kalos League is genuinely one of the biggest mistakes made in the history of the franchise. Crazy how to this day we're still feeling the after-effects and not just on the anime but through plethora of media of the franchise.

Its because the Alain loving executive still can't watch his Alain lose to Ash but wants Alain to be one the master eight so he use this proxy win as an excuse to make his Alain one of the eight strongest trainers in the world.

This is reason Ash wasn't allowed to use his reserves in his biggest tournament because that would meant Greninja would have to return to Ash's team which means that the executive will be forced into producing a rematch where his Alain loses to Ash. This is also why he stretched Ash and Bea's rivalry all the way to hyper class so Mega Lucario's first opponent won't has to be Alain. To him, Alain losing to undefeated Leon ONCE was necessary sacrifice to protect him.

Worst part is, he is still doing the same thing he done with Alain on Horizon where his self insert Roy become champion tier by doing nothing.

Wrong again buddy. I praise & criticize series based on their performance. I agreed that Journey had the better premise but I also got angry when the anime failed execute it properly because they wanted to shove things nobody cares about such as Koharu & Eevee's search for their dream.

Journeys wasn't made for US. It's like writers were so afraid of alienating their younger audience. Also Paul was literally put in as a last second decision. The episode was originally supposed to be a training epiosde between Ash old pokemon and his main team.
