In many cases, the Japanese version IS quite literally the inferior product as a result(unless you're speedrunning, of course.) Sure, the translations may be shit, but that doesn't exactly change with the modern era.
As for the cartridge having every language, yeah it's /cool/, but I don't like what globally synchronized releases have done to the hype cycle. Also, said translations can still absolutely be shit, even with the language for every cartridge. News trickling through from Japan and the Japanese releases used to be huge events for fans which would cause rampant speculation and curiosity, and of course would unite the fans to translate the games themselves before proper release. I know that it's probably better like this for their bottom line or whatever, but I honestly believe that /vp/ and many other Pokemon communities would be a bit healthier if they didn't do globally-synced releases.
