The complete separation of competitive battles (Champions/VGC) from mainline games (gen10 and onwards) is going to kill this franchise.

personally what I think is going to kill the franchise is its constant sloppification with all the buggy unfinished console games, constant stream of soulless mobileslop and the mishandling of the spinoffs, anime and TCG but sure the competitive scene that 99% of the playerbase doesn't give a fuck about is the real issue

I dunno, I actually think it might be the opposite.
For a long time Pokemon's been a bit held back by having to juggle the competitive side and the campaign, to the point where the latter started mostly just feeling like a really dragged out tutorial for the former, so segregating the two will allow them to refine and experiment in the single player while still retaining the competitive integrity of the game as its own separate thing entirely.
It might hurt the longevity of the games individually as these huge live service deals with constant updates but I don't think it'll kill the franchise.

Competitive players make up a small percent of the people that actually buy the mainline games. The largest global challenges, the best indicator of people who by even the broadest of definitions are "competitive players." have never had more than about 150k entrants. At the time those numbers happened SwSh had sold about 15M copies so basically 1 in 100 players is even willing to dabble in competitive. If we assume that all of those 150k only bought the games for pvp (which is absolutely not true) then splitting Champions out wouldn't hurt sales that much. Plus, if Champions ends up being something like "yeah you CAN use rentals, but it's ten times easier to just catch the Pokemon in X game and send it to Home and then Champion" then people will probably keep doing that. Champions is just making it so hacking and injecting isn't really needed for competitive anymore.

The combination of Home and Champions and to a lesser extent, Go is the living game that fans have been requesting for 20 years. The mainline games are the story expansions.

Bad news but Palworld's release is only gonna make it worse. Because the type of mouthbreathers who love the pokemon setting but hated the turn based games have been screeching for Pokemon to play pretty much exactly like it for decades.

Who said that gen 10 won't have battling? Do you know how stupid that would be? I highly doubt Champions will have a same-day update at gen 10's launch. They want people to buy the new games. Putting all the new pokemon in a free mobile app with all the pvp features would sap a lot of sales. I view Champions as a separate live service sort of archive of old mechanics (and eventually, all the pokemon, which new games will never have again), not a replacement for all the new games' pvp systems.

Which is why it's so funny seeing kids assume Champions is going to be anything but an excuse to kill showdown and force more Home subs. There WILL be a Champions tourney at the first Worlds of Gen 10. It's not going to replace cart-based VGC though. Game Freak need SOME way to get kids into the expo hall to buy merch and mobiles sadly don't facilitate that as effectively as their core games (and they know that also).
